The killers who cry crocodile tears

TracieTRACIE ANDREWS

Tracie Andrews' TV appeal to find the road rage “fiend” who'd killed her fiancé Lee Harvey was unforgettable.

In the 1996 press conference, Andrews claimed she and Harvey had been followed by a car on their way home from a pub in Browsgrove, Worcestershire. Both cars stopped and, after an argument between the drivers, the passenger in the car - who she described as a “fat man with staring eyes” - had stabbed Lee.

“It was the most stupid, vile thing that could come out of a car chase,” she told the media, tearfully.

Later the truth came out. Andrews had stabbed her boyfriend 37 times in a roadside argument.

But at the time many people were convinced by Andrews' story. One of them was Lee's mother Maureen who, with her husband Ray, sat beside Andrews during the conference.

press conference “I was so overcome with grief and shock I didn't really take on board her reactions,” said Maureen. “But looking back, I realised she didn't look anyone in the eye and started speaking as if from a script.”

Days after the conference, Andrews tried to commit suicide. By this time, the police were suspicious. They couldn't believe she hadn't sought help after the attack and witnesses didn't remember a second car.

Andrews is now serving a life sentence. “I can't forgive and forget,” says Maureen, 57. “I'll do everything I can to make sure she's behind bars for as long as possible.”

Lee Harvey's mum even held Tracie Andrew's hand during the press conference. The police realised Andrew's story didn't add up after this performance.
