1: English and Scots: from the Old French given name Jacques, the usual French form of Latin Jacobus Jacob. 2: Scots and English: from a pet form of John, probably a borrowing of the Low German and Dutch pet forms Jankin and Jackin, which are from Jan + the diminutive suffix -kin. (The loss of the nasal was a regular development in Low German). In English, the ending came to be associated with the more familiar Anglo-Norman French diminutive suffix -in, which was then omitted to yield Jack as a back-formation. 3: Jewish (Ashkenazic): anglicization of one or more like-sounding Jewish surnames.
