The origin of the name Wheeler

English: occupational name for a maker of wheels (for vehicles or for use in spinning or various other manufacturing processes), from an agent derivative of Middle English whele wheel.

Variants: Wailer, Wayler, Whaler, Whealler, Wheeller, Wheler, Whiler, Wiler, Wyler; Wheelwright; Whilesmith, Wilesmith.

Equivalents: Low German, Dutch: Rademaker. Polish: Kolodziej.

The name Wheeler is particularly common on the Isle of Wight; on the mainland it is concentrated in the neighbouring region of central Southern England. It is fairly evenly distributed over the rest of Southern England, but much less common in the North.
