It is curious that Jonas Jacks describes himself as widowed, as Edith Jakins, the woman I take to be his wife, was still alive, and living elsewhere in Gamlingay. Perhaps the couple were estranged: they were apart at the time of the 1841 and 1861 censuses. But they were together in 1871
