The Facial Survey project started with the discovery of an etching by Wenceslaus Hollar, showing “Iacobvs Stanier, Mercator, Londinenis Ao 1643” (who, according to James Granger's A Biographical History of England, from Egbert the Great to the Revolution, was a merchant of London and translator of Ovid's Epistles). This is the earliest portrait we have showing anyone by our family name (although we would love to see “ye. picture of [Richard Stonyer]'s great grandfather made in Q. Eliz.time” referred to in the Visitation of Staffordshire of 1665).
Some members saw features of their family members in Jacobus' face. So we are gathering pictures of the
faces of people with Stonehewer (or Stanier, or other variants) ancestry, to see if these can be grouped by shared features. If there are
such groupings, we also want to compare these with those found by the DNA project
