This is an eclectic, and far from complete, schedule of events in the Stanier/Stonehewer families. Its main purpose is to show the spread of the surname from its origins in Cheshire, so it features the earliest references to the name in every English and Welsh County, and those Scottish Counties for which references have been found, and in various Countries. But entries have rarely been removed if an earlier one was found, and some Counties have all early and/or particularly significant entries recorded.
KEY | § First known reference to the name in a Country ¶ First known reference to the name in a County of Britain (see map)

※ References to the surname before 1400 should be viewed with caution This is early in the development of surnames, and at that date “John Le Stonhewer” may simply have meant “John the Stonecutter”, with no implication that other bearers of the title are related. The wide geographical spread of the surname suggests that the holders were not related.
