Joan Stonehewer (1910-1969) was a “concert artiste” of the variety theatre tradition, who played the musical saw, tap-bells, sleigh bells, and other novelty instruments, accompanied by a pianist or ensemble. Her engagements included appearances at the Royal Variety Hall and the B.B.C., and events such as dinners, receptions and cabarets. According to an advertising pamphlet from about 1935 her repertoire was music for guests of every taste ... from Beethoven to Gershwin, melody and swing.
She released records on H.M.V, Imperial Crystalate, and the Rex label. Of one of her records (HMV B3823), The Gramophone, May 1931, said: Miss Joan Stonehewer must try to persuade her saw to keep in tune if it is to live up to its claim of “musical”.
Her dates suggest she was Madge Joan Stonehewer of 11 Amerland Road, Wandsworth, the only Joan Stonehewer born 1910 listed in the 1911 census (RG14/2399 sn292). Madge J Stonehewer married Elmer H Townsend in Surrey North East 2nd qtr 1943, and Madge J Townsend died in Surrey South East in 1st qtr 1969 aged 58.
