Transcript

In Dei Nomine Amen The first day of August in the yeare of our Lord God a thousand five hundred four score and fourteen witnesseth that I William Stonehewer of Biddulph sicke in bodie but of perfecte rememberance thanks be the God therefore, do make and cause this my last will and testament in manner and forme following. First I give and bequeath my soule to Almightie God the maker and creator thereof, trusting to be one of Godes elect chldren and inheritor of his heavenly kingdom, then my bodie to be buried in the church of Biddulph when it shall please God to call me to his mercy out of this miserable world.
I give and bequeath to my Sonne Richard Stonehewer twentie pounds of lawfull money of England and fifty five shillings eight pence in the hands of John Stonehewer of Blackwood.
I give and bequeath to my Sonne John Stonehewer five markes of money which he is indebted unto me at this point and one chaffing dishe now in his own handes for and in confirmation of all his whole parte of his childs portion of goods and ten shillings to his three children that nowe is in his hands.
I give and bequeath to Roger Stonhewer my sonn three pounds thirteen shillings four pence for and in confirmation of all his whole parte of his childs portion of goodes.
I give and bequeath to William Stonehewer my sonn twentie three shillings four pence that he oweth me.
I give and bequeath to William Stonehewer my godson one longe board four silver spoons the best salte my sworde and my sealing ring.
I give and bequeath to Roger Bane vicar of Leeke three shillings four pence.
I give and bequeath to Ellen Stonhewer Margery Stonhewer and Joane Stonhewer twentie shillings.
I give and bequeath unto Margarett Turner my servant two shillings.
I give and bequeath unto John Whelocke my servant six pence.
I give and bequeath to Thomas Stonehewer a staff my best hatt and jerkin bothe of black rogge for his pains.
My herriots payed my debtors payed my legacies fulfilled my funeral expenses performed and I brought home then the rest of all my goodes moveable and immoveable quick and dead I give unto William Stonhewer and Richard Stonhewer my two sonnes equally to be divided between them.
I do appoint and ordain for my executors William Stonehewer my sonne and Thomas Stonehewer of Cocknech my lawfull and true executors
and for supervisors or overseers Thomas Roker, John Unwen and John Winckle to see this my will and testament performed.
Their being witnesses Thomas Stonehewer Richard Stonhewer and William Stonehewer with others.

Probate

The probate says that administration of the testator's goods was granted to the executors named in the will, but that they did not appear in person at the court, the oath being taken on their behalf by Thomas Browne. The abbreviation after his name may mean he was a notary. (My thanks to Liz Newman for this translation)
