| I have a small collection of pottery made by the firm
of Bishop and Stonier, who operated in Hanley from 1891 to 1939.
The pieces are decorated with oriental dragons, and the bases have the mark
of a caduceus over the words BISTO ENGLAND.
The caduceus was registed as a trade mark in 1876 to the firm of Powell and Bishop,
and continued to be used as a trademark of Powell, Bishop and Stonier, and of
Bishop and Stonier. The BISTO trademark was used exclusively by Bishop and Stonier.
The bases also have other marks, the significance of which I do not know. They may
be model numbers, in which case an expert might be able to date the pieces more
accurately. If you can help on this, please let me know. Clicking on any of the
images will bring up a full-sized version.
