TEWINGTON - copy holders - 1540 through 1788

These are "copy-hold" land records kept on behalf of the Lord of the Manor. When such lands changed ownership, both the seller and the buyer had to pay certain amounts/fees, and pledge their allegience to the Lord. Please view this brief article for a more detailed explanation of copy-hold.

The records obviously have been re-copied at some point, as the handwriting & ink is uniform. A few entries in the latter half of 1700's were re-arranged out of date order, but grouped together by perhaps a particular piece of land. Dates shown as 1732[3] indicate the date was either shown with both years indicated, or the date given was not clear. It appears there were a few duplicate entries, as well, which have been included.

Most contained the Latin notation "to him, his heirs [wife] and [assigns] for ever, according to the custom of the manor", or indicated that this was the correct information by using "do". Two in 1620 & 1632 had "from seven years to seven years according to the custom of the manor aforesaid". Most if not all of the entries for the 1700's showed "for him and his heirs according to the custom of the said manor" (in English).
