CARMEARS and TREFFRY BRIDGE, LUXULYAN
(J. Mosman, OPC)

While Charles Rashleigh was having Charlestown harbour built, circa 1795, he realized the harbour would need "flushing" to remove silt buildup. After consideration, he conceived of a 6-mile long leat, extending from CarMears in Luxulyon, all the way to Charlestown. The fresh water was held in two reserves, to be used when needed.

This is the current day view of the waterwheel at CarMears, not built by Rashleigh, but by J. Treffry. His viaduct took water to Fowey Consols mines, as well as Par harbour.

The area is lovely to walk through - very quiet, and lovely.

Remnants of the cog-rail system that once existed still remain; evidence of the lively industry these pioneers helped establish.

Pins which once held the tracks in place.

Cogs, that held the rails.

The pathway up to the Tramway - built 1839.

And, lastly, another view of the Water Leat -
