John married Nancy Hammett in 1838. They had three boys and two girls. Their third child, Joseph, died at the age of 24. During a voyage from Liverpool to the West Indies, his sailing vessel was lost at sea and and all on board were drowned. After taking possession of his father's farm at First Beech Hill John carried on lumbering until May 1855 when he moved to Port Mouton, NS.
