Family story about Evan T. Cottrill in the Civil War.

A story about Evan Cottrill deserted the South, he came home & confederate  officers came after him

wounding him . He never went back in service. C.S.A. I now know that this happened after he was captured by the REBELS and forced to fight for them . He saw his chance to escape and took it!

(Also heard story that the Confederates captured him forcing him to fight for the South).

Received pension papers back and it says he was "Captured by the Rebels",

He was in service from February 11,1862,Company "D",11 Regular West Virginia Infantry as a

private till June 30,1862,when he was captured by "the Rebs", Two men give statements that He was captured by the Rebels"

and then he was listed as being a deserter* from Burning Springs,Virginia,on June 8,1862.(* note: this part says mistake ment for someone else for the Deserter from Burning Springs, VA)

 

His name was found on the rolls of this company which had been changed to West Virginia Infantry.

But the muster pay roles could not be found and in the the absence of any evidence that he served

in the military was rejected as not having served his country.

Martha Dobbins not Lucy Kier ( Kyer,Carr) Cottrill Cottrell as thought.

     Alfred always knew he had a whole sister but he did not know what happened to her.  Alfred saw

her only one time but could not recollect anything about her at all or what happened to her,as,he was very little himself.

     Martha Dobbins passed away between 1888 to 1891, Because Marion Lee Cottrill is listed as a widower In the book source Calhoun County WV MARRIAGES 1856 -  1927.

     Marion Lee Cottrill age 21 Gilmer; Calhoun, He married Lucy Kyer age 26 Braxton;

Calhoun County,February 28,1891.

     I have copies of Marriage License, and official certified  "Certificate of Marriage" !!

Marion Lee & Martha were married by Daniel Huffman on December 31,1887 in Gilmer County, WV.

     Daughter is Lona Belle "Onie"  Cottrill born between January and February,1891,when

Martha Dobbins died  and Marion Lee remarried to Lucy Kyer.

     Martha Dobbins is listed in 1880 Roane CountyCensus of WVA with her parents,Thomas & Emzy Dobbins,as well as Charles,age 8 yrs. old,Martha was 7 yrs.old.

     Emza was not married to Thomas Dobbins until August 12,1873, so,she evidently had them both

out of wedlock,or had Martha shortly after her marriage to Thomas Dobbins.

      For some reason Charles' birth had been put into delayed births in Roane County,and he was

given age of 5 yrs.but according to the Census,he was the oldest child.
