He lied about his age as being (younger) so he could marry Irena Jane Cottrill/Cottrell. He didn't want Averill Cottrill to  voice disapproval against the marriage. Alfred Cottrill told this to Stella Cotrill his daughter in law.

Averill did not like Alfred and he and his sons were going to beat him up for seeing Irena Jane.  But she overheard them talking about what they were going to do to him,so,she snuck out and warned him not to come around to visit her. Instead of going back home to her home, they went and got married !!!

Averill did not think Alfred was good enough for her,said he was to poor and would never amount to anything.

When Alfred was 17 years old,he went with hunting with his stepfather William Cottrill in the woods of Calhoun County,West Virginia,close to the Gilmer County,line.  They separted so they could scare out the deer, he said he walked quite a ways in the woods looking around all day.

He said he stopped to rest awhile on a log,when he stood up to leave,he turned to walk away,when

all at once he fell down a big hole in the woods.

 

Alfred got up and looked around to see if he could climb out the hole but there was no way to climb

back out.  It was starting to get dark outside,so,he started looking around the cave to find a way out

while it was still daylight.

 

While he was looking around he came across some skeltons and all kinds of money,silver and gold items,that the Indians had stored in the cave.

There were all kinds of Indian stuff in the cave but he said he got so scared after seeing the

skeltons he stopped looking around.

It got so dark quickly that he had to spend the night in the cave.  In the meanwhile his stepfather and neighbors starting hunting for him,wondering what had happened to him,for he was an excellent hunter

and could get a deer with one shot.

 

Alfred spent the night and part of the next day,trying to find his way out, in the cave before he finally found a way out of the cave.  He had several Indian items when he left the cave that were real small because most of the stuff was was to heavy to carry around to long.

He finally found a spot to climb out but he dropped the one item he had,but he still managed to hold

onto the Indian arrow when he was climbing out. (he could not remember what happened to it or who

took it later)

 

They hunted all night for him but could not find any signs of him,it seemed like he had just completely disappeared off the earth.  They hunted till afternoon of the next day,then gave up on finding him.

 

They all had  just set down to eat dinner when he arrived home.  They took a big look at him, and

asked what had happened to him because he hair had  turned snow-white overnight !!!!!!

 

He said his family did not know whether to believe him or not till he showed them his arrow,which

was quite unusual.   They all wanted it but he said he was going to keep it.  He said he had it for a

long time,then he kind of forgot about it.  He went to get it one day but it was gone!!  He never could

find who took it.

 

Alfred & his stepfather and neighbors went with him the next day to try to find the same spot again.

They knew he would not lie about it because he would always tell the truth even if he got into

trouble for it.

 

But he could not recognize anything for he had only hunted in that area a few times.

They all hunted around there for the next few years but nobody ever found it again.

Evidentally the hole got covered up again and no trace was ever found again.

 

So,somewhere in Calhoun County,close to Gilmer County,West Virginia there is a fortune in gold,
