STILSON/STILLSON FAMILY RECORDS

1646 - 1993

The original work was presented tot he Multnomah Chapter of D.A.R. by the compiler, Bertha Taft Keith in November 1954. Bertha Taft Keith worked on ancestry informationfor the D.A.R. She compiled much of this information for Mrs. A. B. Keith of Spokane Washington. She may have been a Stilson descendent, but this has not been confirmed.

Additions, contributions and updates to this text have been made by Dan Touse, Christie Stilson, Agnes Stillson, Janice Hanson, Susan Nahas, Gladys Stilson, Emily Wilson, Elaine Hart, Rosemary Channel, Goldie Benser Stillson, Iris Kirkley, John Burbank, Olive Stillson, Mariana Cornish, Carol Wilson, Joye Wyatt, Frances Roland and many, many others in 1991, 1992 and 1993.

References are made throughout the text to the records of Agnes Stillson. Agnes amassed an incredible amount of information over the years doing Stilson/Stillson research. Truly a dedicated genealogist! We have inserted the information from her records, but have not verified the sources of all the entries nor followed up with researching them. Hopefully, as leads they will assist you, the researcher, as you discover your Stilson/Stillson heritage. Special thanks to Goldie Benser Stillson, Rosemary Channel and Mariana Cornish for valiantly tackling the job of proof reading the book. Unfortunately, changes after their proof reading may have resulted in some errors slipping past.

We would like to note updated information and any corrections which will be used to supplement this family history. Please send family information to : Christie Stilsons, 8110 SW Wareham, Portland, OR 97223

And sincere thanks for the enthusiasm and encouragement for this project provided by all the Stilson/Stillson families.

INTRODUCTION

This book has been the result of a great many people. Our gratitude to Charles Stillson and Bertha Taft-Keith for all of their fine research. Whithout which, so much valuable material would have been lost. This text follows the outline done by Bertha Taft-Keith in her Stilson family genealogy printed on an old manual typewriter back in the early 1950's, a dusty volume of which was found int he Portland Genealogy Forum and that inspired the beginning of the updating of her work. Her work has been retyped; however, the text written in italic is new information added to the original done by Ms. Keith. Other sections which were researched by various Stillson/Stilson family members have been credited as well as work from Charles Stillson. Charles Stillson compiled a family history back in 1939 and 100 copies of the book were printed. It was noted that Charles Stillson and Bertha Taft-Keith had shared research information. We were pleased to be able to track down the descendants of Charles Stillson and also update their family lineage.

We have tried to include as much information as possible, but since it is a Stilson history, we have had to limit some of the lines that diverge too far. We have also included tidbits of information from sources such as census listings. Sometimes it is difficult to confirm which of the fmily members fit the listing in the census records, since the names often repeat. However, theses are included as possible leads for others to pursue. The closing section of the book is entitled "Unplaced Stilson" and grew to surprisingly large proportions. There are many names which have not yet been fit into the overall puzzle or information which cannot be tied to a particular Stilson lineage. We have included as much information as possible in this section to help others in their search.

We were also pleased to discover several families that had arrived in the U.S. and then Americanized their name to Stilson or Stillson. What a compliment to our family Name!

We hope you enjoy reading this as much as we have enjoyed putting it all together. We apologize, in advance, for any omissions or errors which might have occurred. We have endeavored to be as accurate as possible. There are several addresses at the end of the book to which correspondence with corrections and additions can be forwarded. At the urging of many family members, we are also including a supplemental section which is fundamentally an address book of all the Stilson/Stillson descendants we have tracked down and their current addresses.

And the search continues...
