Marriages for the Cornish Parish of St Stithians

Home/Index

Feb. 8, 2009 - Belerion books has announced the release of 3 CDs, "The Martin Family of Stithians in Cornwall", "Stithians Families 1" and "Stithians Families 2", by Edward Martin, the renowned genealogist.  This body of work details the lineages of the major families of Stithians, including the following names:

Martin, Bath, Bishop, Dunston/Dunstan, Gill, Morton, Odger, Pearce, Penhalurick, Reed, Spargo, Andrew, Coode, Knuckey, Oppy, Phillips, Polsue/Polzew/Polsew, Sarah, Trelease, Trevena, Treweek, Veale, White, Williams, Winsor and many other names of people who married into these lines.

Together they comprise an indispensible resource for anyone doing family research in this parish. A must have!!

The researcher should bear in mind that until the twentieth century and for most of the period covered in this database average infant mortality rates in England ranged between 15 - 18 %, during the first year of life. Between 25 and 30 percent of all children died before age 15 ! Many of the children baptised in Stithians didn't live long enough to marry and procreate.

Adult mortality rates being what they were, a fairly large proportion of these children would grow up orphans and a much larger group would have lost at least one parent.

Though there were many exceptions, the average number of children born to a family was an unremarkable four or five, not including stillbirths. Women married relatively late (23 - 27) and entered menopause at 40, thereby reducing their productive years. High adult mortality rates limited the growth of many families, while breast feeding, malnutrition and sickness diminished fertility and desire.

(See Lawrence Stone - "The Family Sex and Marriage in England 1500 -1800")

The researcher should also be aware that families frequently named newborns after children who had previously died. What appears to be a duplicate record with a different date is not.

Also, these are baptism records! In many cases the baptism date does not reflect an approximate birth date. In many cases the baptism took place months and even years later (In two cases 18 & 20 years). What appears to be twins and triplets can often be children of various ages all being baptized together. In only some of the cases does the curate note ages and birth dates.

Because of the size of the files the database has been divided into seven periods. They may take some time to upload into your browser. Use your page search feature (Edit+Search Page) to locate the names you're looking for. Be aware that names were recorded with many variations and that, in many cases, the transcriber could not clearly read the handwriting and may have only provided the legible letters, interspaced with question marks.

The parish registers for Stithians, for the period from 1665 - 1713, are in a piteous state. They are almost completely illegible with only an occasional name discernable. Many of the records for the period 1713 -1739 are partials; the names also eaten away by rot.

Dec. 2009 - The Bishop's transcripts from 1676 to 1716 have been added. Unfortunately many years are missing. Dating is done in the old style whereby the year ran from March 25 to March 25. Therefore Jan. 1710 is Jan. 1711 in our calendar.
