Feb. 8, 2009 - Belerion books has announced the release of 3 CDs, "The Martin Family of Stithians in Cornwall", "Stithians Families 1" and "Stithians Families 2", by Edward Martin, the renowned genealogist.  This body of work details the lineages of the major families of Stithians, including the following names:

Martin, Bath, Bishop, Dunston/Dunstan, Gill, Morton, Odger, Pearce, Penhalurick, Reed, Spargo, Andrew, Coode, Knuckey, Oppy, Phillips, Polsue/Polzew/Polsew, Sarah, Trelease, Trevena, Treweek, Veale, White, Williams, Winsor and many other names of people who married into these lines.

Together they comprise an indispensible resource for anyone doing family research in this parish. A must have!!

Life expectancy during the period of this database was not very long. You had between a 25 and 30 percent chance of dying between birth and 15 years. Young adults died at a rate of about 15%. A woman over 21 could then expect to live to only 34 years due to multiple childbirths and the lack of obstetric knowledge. A man, particularly a squire, could expect to attain a ripe old age into his mid-sixties.

Plague, smallpox, scarlet fever and other epidemic killers reached Stithians as they did other parishes in Cornwall. The period between 1570 and 1670 saw frequent reoccurences of Plague. Mass death brought mass burials and we can expect to see a deterioration in the record keeping at these times. Famine raged between 1594-97, due to wholesale crop failures and probably returned again in 1622 - 23 when the cloth industry failed at the same time as food prices rose. Fires and accidents took their toll. However, the greatest single threat, particularly for the young, was contaminated food and drinking water.

(See Lawrence Stone - "The Family Sex and Marriage in England 1500 -1800")

'The burials are divided into seven, roughly thirty year increments and are sorted by surname, date of burial and place of residence. A small portion of the original records give the cause of death, but unless you want to find out that your ancestor was hung for stealing sheep, don't ask!

A collection of wills and admons for Stithians is in process of being compiled.

May 16 2009 -  This section has been expanded with the inclusion of Stithians Burials from 1710 - 1812. For those who enjoy statistics, there were 2635 burials in the parish over this 102 year period. This equates to an average of 25. 8 per year, however the average was 17.2 for the first 25 years and 38.28 for the last 25, a clear indicator of the growth of the population. Some particularly unfortunate years could see upwards of 50 deaths, no doubt attributable to disease, as many of the deaths occur in the same family. Of the total burials, approximately 499 were identified as daughters and 554 as sons. Of these some 39 were illegitimate (base). Unfortunately, the registers for this period did not include places of abode within the parish, nor the ages of the individuals at death.

Dec. 30, 2009 - Burials from the bishop's transcripts have been added from 1676 - 1711. Unfortunately, many years are missing and will be included when (if) found. Dating is done in the old style whereby the year ran from March 25 to March 25 - January 15 1710 would be 1711 according to our calendar.
