A display of ganseys shown in the course of the Gansey Service held in old
St Stephen's Church on Sunday 11th 2011. Their distinctive patterns were
said to be useful in theidentification of drowned sailors and fishermen.

MARTHA'S SAMPLER   ANN STORM SHAW'S SAMPLER
 
MARTHA STORM (1822-1903), future wife of the Congregational minister, Thomas Philips (1822-1880), was about thirteen when she made this. Two of the shipmaster brothers whom she addressed were lost within two years.   ANN STORM SHAW (1875-1965) produced this to commemorate her grandfather, Lomar Will Storm, who died a year later, aged 87.

I hereby certify that Jacob Storm served aboard my vessel the Brig Coquette of Whitby 169 toms from February 18th 1861 up to this date as Master in the coasring trade and Master in the foreign trade and always conducted himself in a sober, steady and praiseworthy manner.

.there is a cemetery in which there is a grave ...........
  .......of a shipmate of William Harold Moorsom b1887 who was drowned in the same incident....   ......whilst serving aboard SS Teesbridge. William's grave has not yet been found.

The bench in front of the buoy is conveniently placed for those seeking a rest after walking up the hill from the sea front. It has an inscription indicating that the STORM families have lived in Robin Hood's bay for over 500 years..........
