Joseph Thompson (1779-1858) was one of the founders of PITT STREET UNITING church along with David Jones and John Fairfax. Built in the 1840s this is a picture of the then Congregational Church in 1848. | ||||
MOSMAN BAY | ||||
A picture of Mosman Bay painted in the
19th century looking down the bay with a distant view of
the city of Sydney. It was here in what was then called
Great Sirius Cove that HMS Sirius, flagship of the First
Fleet, was careened. There was a name change later in the
1830s when Archibald Mosman established his whaling
station. T.R. Millar's daughter, Anne, was born in the
suburb of Mosman. The picture is presented by permission of the National Library of Australia with the reference as shown.. |

H.M. Bark ENDEAVOUR | ||||
Continuing to look back into Australian history here
is the Australian built replica of H.M. Bark Endeavour
sailing towards her spiritual home of Whitby. The 40 year old Lieutenant James Tiberius Cook was appointed Captain of the Endeavour in 1768 and his exploration of the South Seas included a survey of the eastern coast of Australia and the Great Barrier Reef.
