    Four sons of Joseph Thompson 1779-1858 and Mary Anne nee Brown 1786-1871.

On the left is Samuel Herbert 1821-1910 who worked as a warehouseman and then became a stock and station agent as well as a mercantile broker. The other brothers present are believed to be Joseph 1814-1902, John 1818-1889 and Thomas James 1830-1917.

All were born in England and emigrated to Australia aboard the James Harris on 9.10.1833.

    Herbert, son of Samuel Herbert Thompson 1821-1910 and Martha Emma nee Foss, married Grace Mary DIXON 1858-1935 the daughter of George James Dixon 1818-1879 and Anna Mary nee KIRBY 1828-1879.

Anna Mary's brother was Robert Shum KIRBY, owner and master of the brig Anna Dixon.

Captain Kirby sailed the Anna Dixon to Adelaide where it was engaged in coastal trade.

  Anna Mary Kirby1829-1872, daughter of Robert and Grace Kirby, and her husband George James Dixon 1818-1906. On the right George is in two photos at different ages.The two photos below might have been taken on their wedding day in 1849..

  Herbert Samuel Thompson and Grace Mary Dixon thought to be on their wedding day 23rd June 1880.

Herbert was an architect and two examples of his work are shown here.

Sadly Herbert died in 1907 playing cricket at Concord Oval.

  Kenneth Sanders Thomapson 1886-1918, brother of Frank Herbert, husband of Nellie nee Scott, enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force 31.3.1916. As a 2nd Lieutenant he embarked at Sydney on RMS Ormonde on 2.3.1918.
He landed in France on 16.8.1918 and was posted to the 42nd Battalion of the 2nd Australian Division. The battalion was engaged in retaking the town of Peronne which had been retaken by the Germans in March.

Kenneth was killed by enemy machine gun fire on 31.8.1918 just 15 days after landing in France. He is commemorated at Peronne Communal Cemetery Extension.

          Wilfred George Thompson 1893-1966, a younger brother of Kenneth Sanders and Frank Herbert, also served in WW1.
Lieut W.G.Thompson's record includes:
1915 In April at Tel el Kebir recovering from war wounds
1915 Later at Gallipoli
1915 In December left for Cairo having been taken ill.
1917 Wounded in action with a gun shot wound to the head.
1918 Gassed by gas shell. Hospitalised.
1919 Demobilised.
Awarded 1914/1918 Star, British War Medal and Vistory medal.

  Kathleen married Arthur Greenhill who was born in Leeds but went to live in the USA early 1900s. Working for a USA insurance company he was posted to Australia where he met Kathleen..Their son, Kenneth, was named after the Kenneth Saunders Thompson above. Although born in Melbourne he eventually saw war service with USA forces. Their daughter, Joan, was named after Kenneth Saunders Thompson's daughter Joan.
