OLD 'BAY' NAMES
Extract from THE OXFORD GUIDE TO FAMILY HISTORY by DAVID HEY; Oxford University Press 1993

"In his study of the remote community of Robin Hood's Bay, Alan Storm has shown that 13 surnames which were present in the village in 1540 were held by no fewer than 130 people there in 1841. Two of these distintive surnames (STORM & GRANGER) were shared by no less than 90 people. Within the wider unit of the parish of Fylingdales, 27 surnames which were once connected with Robin Hood's Bay, or were still found there, can be traced from 1540 to 1841, when they were borne by 193 persons. Altogether some 41.6% of the enumerated population of this Yorkshire village in 1841 bore surnames that had entered the parish by 1650."

GRANGER and GRAINGER - Of the fact that many GRANGERS and GRAINGERS are laid to rest in the Old Churchyard, Captain James Granger of Robin Hood's Bay writes: ......."it is a little known genealogical fact that it was the subject of 'gravestones' that caused our patronymics to diverge. When the 'Gringoires' came to England at the time of the Norman Conquest, they anglicised the name to Grainger. This remained the accepted spelling whilst wooden crosses were the norm for marking burial grounds, but the introduction of headstones marked a turning point. My side of the family, being of a parsimonious nature and stonemasons' remunerations being on the high side, we decided to shorten the name to Granger as a simple expedient. Since that time we have had no further dealings with our profligate cousins and consider ourselves to be a race apart."
