This site covers the names of Stretton, Stratton and all of the thirty identified variants of these names.

I have complied over 70 Family Trees in relation to the Stretton Family.  This number varies from time to time as links between one family and another become established.  These Family Trees are all complied on the LDS, PAF programme

The meaning of these surnames is the same, and comes from an old Roman name (Straettun).  Straettun means "on a Roman road".  Therefore Parishes and villages on Roman roads had of the name of Straettun  such as "Stretton en le Field", "Stretton Magna", "Stretton Parva" and "Stretton on the Fosse".

The name of Stretton is found in the counties of; Cheshire, Derbyshire, Rutland, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Shropshire, Herefordshire and Leicestershire.

Whereas the name of Stratton is found is the counties of; Gloucestershire, Norfolkshire, Wiltshire, Buckinghamshire, Huntingtonshire and Somersetshire.

The inclusion of the name Stratton is the result of the emigration of Stretton to other parts of the world this saw the name changed to Stratton. A good example of this is found in America where the name of Stretton was changed to Stratton.
