The emigrants saga continues

Last we saw the family they lived i Sandefjord. Lets look for the parents in the 1865 census.

The 1900 census told us that they both was born in Stokke. So lets se what Stokke has to offer. Just choose Vestfold in Fylke and Stokke in Municipality an period as "All periods"

Wow, that was much, but only one thing that we could use since we haven't gotten far enough back in time. So we go for the 1865 census.

I started with the father Lorentz, and in the 1865 census the age was given in how old the was going to be in 1866. This was to avoid that during the count some have had their birthday and some had not. So the age was usually off by one year. But is just true with children.

The older you was the greater was the chance of errors as at that time they did not have personal paper telling when they was born. This was usually done by memory.

On the father I'll just display how I found him as that was quite easy by now.

You can se that I started with the sex, then Firstname, (In some of the censuses display Norwegian messages, but you should be able to understand what is what as the same titles are placed above the colums) then I went for the Lastname and and took me down to 15 and I did not go any further as he was on the first page No. 4 from the bottom.

And here the parents and family of Lorents are

And here we stop the search for Lorentz family. But there is one important information on this picture. See that grayed area in the upper right corner? Gardsnamn means farms name in English. And it just so happens that for this area (Stokke) there are "bygde" books that contain information about the farms and those who lived there. If you are curious about you may look up Lorents in Lorents Bergs book "Stokke bygdebok" that is available online here.

As for Lorents wife I did a search for her, but I came up with 3 alternatives in Stokke. They was all called Karen A. But the most probable one I found in Sandefjord. There the girl was in the correct age range and called Karen Amalie both i 1875 and 1865. To find the correct Karen Amalie I would go for the church books in Sandefjord and Stokke between 1880 and 1886 and look for their marriage. Because then the father of Karen Amalie would be displayed.
