29th May 1763, John Gibbens & Ann Bolwell both of Seend.

John,

Firstly, the Figgins family all seem to tie together for both Seend & Trowbridge making them what looks like the only Figgins family in either Parish. The only exception is Daniel, shown as the father of two children in Trowbridge.

In my opinion, the fact that both William & Henry are shown as Figance in the marriage register but as Figgins (with the same partners) when parents of children in the Baptism records for St James signifies that they are the ones we are looking for.

Obviously the most striking thing of note in that the first baptism we found was for Jonathan, whose parents are William & Hannah. We were unable to find a marriage of William & Hannah so assume that the name is mispelt or was misread as it reverts to Frances for the rest of their children.

Also you will note that there are 3 Jonathans baptised to William & Frances/Hannah on the list, we didn't have time to check the burial register for St James but hope this should clear that one up, we will check this on a return visit.

Going further back to the Seend records it was good to see that all three of the marriages found in St James, John, Henry & William appear to be brothers, (which I believe confirms the link between the Seend, Trowbridge and London Figgins), as you can see Jonathan, the fourth brother died age 22 without marrying.

We were unable to find a record of Ann's marriage or death in Seend or St James, Trowbridge but will check the burial registers for Seend beyond 1812 and see if this yields any success.

Unfortunately at this time it appears we only have 2 generations of Figgins living in Seend from 1774 until 1800ish. The one marriage we found in Seend is at best a long shot. If that is not them, and I suspect it is not we are kind of at a loss. We also know for certain that they didn't marry in St James, Trowbridge, although they may have died in Seend later than 1812, which we need to check. Is Searching the I.G.I for a John & Ann Figgins in Wiltshire likely to yield any results?

Alice Pockson married John Cole in the Sept Quarter 1867. She had eight children with John Cole. John died in approx 1897 and Alice then married Ephraim Figgins on May 30th 1899. Her age would have been 53 then and not 49 as stated on the marriage certificate.

No trace has yet been found of Alices family. Alfred Pockson her father was an undertaker and deceaced at the time of her marriage to Ephraim. He does not appear on the 1871 census!

It was no secret that Albert was Illegitimate and the story is that his roots were in Wales, but no one surviving now, knows the true story. The name Morgan somewhat confirms the Wales story.

Above in the 1891 census, possibly our Albert Morgan and mother Charlotte, but no firm evidence. Laurence Duffy's occupation is a Hawker on the original census sheet. When Albert married Rebecca Figgins 10 years later he put his fathers occupation down as Hawker on his wedding certificate, but it also said that his fathers name was Morgan!

The Duffey's (spelt different) above lived in the house next door and were also Hawkers. Possibly a connection with Laurence Duffy

We also have to ask is Laurence Duffy, Albert's Father? as he would have been 17 when Albert was born!! Not impossible, but more likely that Charlotte moved in with Duffy at a later date. (as this Albert was born in Mile End)

It's a long shot , but not a lot of other evidence has been found so far.

1st World War Albert was in the Essex Regiment, volunteer, stretcher bearer.

After moving from Southwark in about 1930, the Morgan family moved to Mabley Street, Homerton then 145 Southwold Road Clapton.
