Gladys at home with Frank

Frank was born in 1900 and was the only child. A gifted singer in his own right, he married Gladys Swarthout of the Metropolitan Opera.

Gladys married Frank Chapman in Englewood, New Jersey, two years after they met in 1929 in an opera house in Italy. It was her second marriage.  Mr. Chapman, who was a graduate of Princeton, Class of 1922, was also a distingushed operatic baritone.  They each attended the other's debut in New York and a year later sang in a joint recital.  Mr. Chapman served as his wife's agent, approving contracts and appearances throughout her life.  He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.

They maintained a home on a farm in Connecticut and an apartment in New York City before they moved to Italy in the 1960's.
