- Anderson, Robert Charles, The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England, 1620-1633, 1996. In 1:292-298, "ORIGIN: Unknown. MIGRATION: 1633. FIRST RESIDENCE: Boston. REMOVES: Ipswich 1636, Haverhill, 1652. OCCUPATION: Mariner. ESTATE: Matthias Button sold one half acre houselot in Ipswich to William Symmons of Ipswich, it 'having been granted to John Thornton, deceased, and falling into the hands of the grantor by marriage with Joane, widow of said Thornton, who is living,' entered 16 November 1639 ... On 18 March 1658[/9?] 'Matthias Button and Tegell his wife of Haverhill' sold to John Hazeltine of Rowley six acres of planting land, three acres of meadow at Hawke's meadow and three commonages ... On 14 February 1664[/5?] 'Matthias Button of Haverhill' mortgaged to Mr. John Ward of Haverhill 'my mansion or dwelling house and a parcel of land belonging to me'; Elizabeth acknowledged the deed and made her mark ... Button brought in an account of what he lost in the first 'when John Godfrey burnt his house' ... The clerk of the writs at the October Term, 1672, was ordered to inquire after the estate left by Matthias Button ... at the April Term, 1673, and the court addressed the fact that widow Elizabeth Button refused to relinquish her dower right as the court directed ... (2) By 16 November 1639 Joan (___) Thornton, widow of John Thornton of Ipswich ... (3) By about 1650 Teagle ___; died Haverhill 4 February 1662[/3] as a result of the firing of their house by John Godfrey ... (4) Haverhill 9 June 1663 Elizabeth (Wheeler) Duston ... COMMENTS: ... R. Glen Nye and Katherine (Watson) Nye identify Matthias Button as 'a son of Thomas Button of Harrold, Bedford Co., England. He was baptized there October 11, 1607' [Button Gen 23]. Such a baptism does exist, but there is no other evidence in support of this claim. Furthermore, since our Matthias is called at one point a 'Dutchman,' he presumably derived from a Germanic-speaking region on the Continent and not from England."
- Button, A., Genealogical Sketch of the Early Descendants of Matthias Button, 2nd ed., 1903. On p. 9-10, "Peter Button of Stonington, Ct., and Westerly, R.I., (son of Matthias and Teagle Button of Haverhill, Mass.) born there July 17, 1660 ..."
- Chase, George Wingate, The History of History of Haverhill, Massachusetts, from its First Settlement in 1640 to the Year 1860, 1861. On p. 72, "The following table contains the valuation of those to whom house lots were laid out at various times, but whose names do not appear previous to 1650:- ... Matthias Button, £60". On p. 76-77, "The second division of plough-land was laid out on the 7th of June, 1652. The proportion was four acres to one acre of house lot. ... Matthias Button, 6 acres". On p. 93, "Whereas the law provides for the prevention of the great inconvenience and damage that otherways would accrue by those persons that have built houses or cottages upon the common, or their own land, since 1660, that have not lawful right thereunto, to the great prejudice of the house proprietors. Thereof we whose names are hereunto subscribed, do judge it meet for the prevention as abovesaid, and do here set down the names of those that have built houes upon the Common of Haverhill, or their own land, since the year above said ... Matthias Button ... (Signed) ... Selectmen of Haverhill, in the year 1668." On p. 97, "Matthias Button came over with the first Governor of Massachusetts (Endicott) in 1628. He was living in a thatched house in Haverhill as late as 1670, and gave the Rev. Thomas Cobbett (of Ipswich) some of the facts communicated to Dr. Increase Mather, of the early troubles with the Indians. He died in 1672." On p. 115, "From the Court Records we learn, that, in 1671, a thatched house, belonging to one Matthias Button, and situated somewhere near the present house of Mr. Thomas West, (one mile northeasterly from the village) was burnt. ... Button was a Dutchman and seems to have been an unusually moveable one. He first lived in the village, then in the western part of town, then in the eastern, and finally settled where his house was burned. Rev. Thomas Cobbett say that Button came to this country in 1628, with the first governor of Massachusetts. He was of Ipswich in 1639, and came to Haverhill in 1646, from that place. He died in 1672, at a great age. ... By his wife Lettice he had Mary, baptised February 25, 1634; and Daniel, February 22, 1635. By his wife Teagle, he had six children (see appendix). He married Elizabeth Duston in 1663. Daniel, probably a son of Matthias, was in Lothrop's company, and was killed at Bloody Brook battle, September 18, 1675."

Peter Button (1660-1726): 1m. Sarah Crandall (c1665-c1696), 2m. Mary Lamphere (1668-1727)
- Anderson, Robert Charles, The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England, 1620-1633, 1996. In 1:292-295, "Matthias Button ... CHILDREN: ... viii Peter, b. Haverhill 17 July 1660; deceased before the division of his father's estate in November 1676." In 3:2088, "Matthias Button, page 295, CHILDREN: viii Peter: In the sketch the claim is made that he 'deceased before the division of his father's estate in November 1676.' This statement should not have been made, as the division clearly implies three surviving sons, and only two other than Peter are known: Daniel and Matthias. Edward Yeomans, who married Peter's elder half-sister Mary Button, moved to Stonington, Connecticut, and in two of his deeds, both made in 1692, Peter Button was a witness [Stonington LR 2:197]. According to Austin, by 1688 Peter Button had married Mary Lanphere, daughter of George Lanphere of Westerly ..."
- Button, A., Genealogical Sketch of the Early Descendants of Matthias Button, 2nd ed., 1903. On p. 9-10, "Peter Button of Stonington, Ct., and Westerly, R.I., (son of Matthias and Teagle Button of Haverhill, Mass.) born there July 17, 1660, d. at Stonington, Ct., 1726; md. Mary (dau. of George Lamphere of Westerly, R.I.) 1687, and had Peter, Mary, Matthias and Eliphall, born Stonington, Ct., and Jebediah, Samuel, Cyrus, Joseph, and dau. Elizabeth - the latter five born at Westerly, R.I. The will of Peter Button, made at Westerly, R.I., January 4, 1725, names wife Mary as his executrix, son Matthias, Jebediah, Samuel, Cyrus, Joseph and Peter, dau. Eliphall Parks, dau. Mary Lewis - his dau. Elizabeth not named in the will and probably had died unmarried. As the will of Peter Button was made and executed in Westerly, R.I., in 1725, and as records show he died in Stonington in 1726, it is evident that he first lived in Stonington, where four of his children were born; thence moved to Westerly about 1695, where he purchased 160 acres of land, which he divided among his six sons, and probably returned to Stonington to spend his remaining days (perhaps with son or daughter living there), as he was quite well advanced in years."
