John Symonds (c1595-1671): 1m. Ruth Fox (1601-c1636), 2m. Elizabeth --- (-1677)
- Hoyt, David W., The Old Families of Salisbury and Amesbury, Massachusetts, 1897-1916. In 2:602, "John Symonds, of Salem, m. Elizabeth ---. He was of Sm. in 1636, had 7 persons in his family there in 1637, ment. in '43, '45, '54, '57, etc., grants of land, grand jury, etc. Will Aug. 16, Sept. 19, 1671; wife Eliz. ment."
- Moriarty, George Andrews, "John Symonds of Salem, Mass.", New England Genealogical and Historical Register, 96:205, 1942. "John Symonds, the early settler of Salem, Mass., was granted land there near the North River in 1636. On 29:1:1669, aged about 74 years, he deposed in the case of Ingersol vs. Barney (Essex Quarterly Court Files). His family in Salem consisted of a wife Elizabeth and four children to wit: James (he deposed on 24 June 1685, aged about 50 years (Suffolk Court Files no. 2339)); Catherine married Jacob Towne; Ruth married Job Swinnerton Jr.; and Samuel born in January 1637/8. John's will, dated 16 Aug. 1671, was proved 19 Sept. 1671 (Essex County Probate). The following items show that John Symonds came from Great Yarmouth, co. Norfolk, England, and that Elizabeth was his second wife. She was perhaps the mother of his youngest child Samuel. Dr. Bentley in his 'Diary' (ed. Essex Institute) notes that he saw the papers in an old law suit of James Symonds (son of John), which stated that John came from Great Yarmouth, co. Norfolk, where he married Ruth Fox. He expected to inherit lands in Norwich. From the Parish Register of St. Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, co. Norfolk ... John Symonds was taxed in the Subsidy of 18 James 1 [1620/1] in South Middle Ward at Great Yarmouth (perhaps the father of the Salem man) and Daniel Fox was taxed in the same subsidy at Yarmouth. The Symonds family of Norwich at this time was a prominent one. Their pedigree is in the Norfolk Visitation, but the earlier generations are all false. The parentage of John Symonds has not yet been ascertained."
