- 22 Nov. 1926, "Mrs. Wesley Bird Dies. The funeral of Mrs. Clemma Bird was held at Alvo Wednesday, November 17. She was born January 16, 1849, in Whiteside county, Illinois. At the age of nine years she moved with her parents to the eastern part of Cass county, near Mt. Pleasant, where she grew to young womanhood. On December 9, 1868, she was united in marriage with Wesley Bird, of Blountsville, Indiana. To this union were born twelve children, eight girls and four boys. Two of the girls died in infancy. At the age of 16 she was converted and joined the M.E. Church. She was a loyal member of that church, doing her best to emulate her Master at all times. In the spring of 1869 she moved with her husband to their homestead northeast of Alvo, which has been her home ever since. She experienced many of the trials, hardships and privations of the early pioneers. Her husband preceded her in death, being laid to rest in the Alvo cemetery in 1913. She passed away at 3:30 a.m. on Monday, November 15, aged 77 years, 9 months and 29 days. She is survived by two sisters, the Misses Bates of Weeping Water, ten great-grandchildren, 26 grandchildren and ten children, Warren, of Arriba, Colo.; Arthur I., of Alvo; Mrs. Amy Elder, of Mankato, Kansas; Mrs. Ethel Hughes, of Cope, Colo.; Mrs. Kate Hardnock, of Lincoln; Mrs. Mollie Kitzel, of Alvo; Mrs. Ollie Friend and Mrs. Shasta Taylor of Alvo; Joseph, of Mankato, Kansas; and Roscoe, of Elmwood. Her body was laid to rest beside that of her husband in the Alvo cemetery. The funeral services were conducted in the Alvo M.E. church by the Rev. R.H. Chenoweth, of Alvo." Hughes in Cass County in 1867, two children: Wilbert E. & Edway C., both of this county. "Mr. Hughes homesteaded in 1872 the farm now occupied by E.C. Hughes. At this time there was only one homestead between the Hughes homestead and Jewell City. Mr. Hughes died on East Buffalo, in Washington Township, Jewell Co., April 22, 1873." Mrs. Hughes married Magnus M. Nelson at Mt. Pleasant, Cass County, 31 Mar. 1874, two children: Viola Grace Getman & Hattie Edna (born 14 Mar. 1877, died 23 Oct. 1879), "Into this family also came a motherless little girl, two years of age. She is now Mrs. Mattie Addie of Agra, Kansas." Survivors include her husband, 2 sons, 2 daughters, 2 brothers (Samuel Dillman of Mankato and Daniel F. Dillman of Yates Center), and 12 grandchildren. Member of the Mankato M.E. Church "since the early seventies", member of the W.R.C. of Mankato "since early eighties", and "an early settler of this county", burial in Mt.
