- 8 Aug. 1862, "SERIOUS DISTURBANCE. - On Saturday evening last, a rather serious breach of the peace occurred in connection with the labourers employed in the works going on at the harbour. Being pay-night, the men got exceedingly noisy, and a tendency to rioting became apparent among them. Police constable M'Millan, who was on duty, went forward to the men, and cautioned them to be quiet; but the only result of his interference was a knock down blow from one of the excited Irishmen, which was twice repeated after the constable had regained his feet. A number of fishermen and others of the inhabitants who had been attracted to the spot by the noise, seeing the brutal way in which the policeman was treated, one of the fisherman, Alexander Russell, cried out that it was a shame to see the man so abused, and he ran forward to give some assistance to the policeman. The navvies served out Russell in the same manner as they had done M'Millan, but this proved too much for the forbearance of the onlookers, who rushed forward in a body to the rescue. This led to a regular hand to hand fight, which lasted for upwards of half an hour, and in which heavy blows were given on both sides, but the result was that the Irishmen at length broke up and fled. Shortly afterwards, one of their number, Dailly by name, who was identified as the man who had struck the policeman, was captured and lodged in jail. At the burgh police court on Monday - James Dall, Esq., Chief Magistrate presiding - Dailly was charged with riotous conduct and assault. He was convicted and sentenced to pay a fine of £2, failing payment, 30 days' imprisonment. The fine, by the subscriptions of his comrades, was immediately paid. Mr. Dall, in passing sentence, alluded to the serious character of the disturbance, and took the opportunity of thanking the fishermen and the inhabitants for the prompt and efficient assistance which they had given the authorities in preserving the peace."
