bullet  Research Notes:

The original Marriage record for William Daniel & Louisa Cline, clearly is written William Martin Daniel

James E. Daniel of Missouri, has for many years traveled accross the United States personally talking to Daniel families and documenting their knowlege of their particular families. In 2004, Claudie and I traveled to Missouri to visit with him and to see his collection of photos and documents he had and was graciously allow us to take a lot of those to a local copier for our own collection. He and his wife also served us a wonderful lunch, a visit we remember so fondly. Further documenting our connection is DNA test matching our Daniel family lines.

James Daniel's Research on the correct middle name:
Possibly William Marion Daniel -- He named one of his sons Marion
Possibly William Martin Daniel -- Descendants from Ft. Worth, Tx, says this is his name. He named one of his son Hunley Martin Daniel.

Notes by J. E. Daniel on our Daniel family: I think William served in Wilson's Cavelry (21st Regiment) for the Confederate States. This unit was made up in Henderson County, Tennessee in 1864 and paroled in May 1865. Listed with William was H. W. Daniel and Walt Daniel. I am assuming this is Herald Wiggins Daniel and Walter Wooten Daniel, brothers of William. Herald had lived in Arkansas and was married to Lucinda McNatt, who had a lot of family living in Lawrence County near Aurora, Missouri. It appears Herald and Lucinda moved to that area (Lawrence County) of Missouri where he left his wife and children and went to Tennessee to join up with Walter and William to join the cavelry. At the end of the war, William probably followed Herald back to Missouri and Walter went back to Henderson County Tennessee where his family was. William M. married Louisa Cline there and they had their first child in 1873. In 1879 Walter and his family left Henderson County and are recorded in the 1880 census at Aurora, Missouri as is William M. and his family. Herald is recorded in Union County, Arkansas in 1870 and in Hill County, Texas in 1880. Walter and William also went to Texas. Walter purchased property in Erath County in 1884 as did Herald Ray Daniel, a descendant of William M. through his second wife, says that William M. was a traveling Methodist preacher and he traveled all the way to Oregon and back to Texas.

In a letter from Weldon Littleton Daniel , he says that his father, Littleton Daniel
the 4th was married to Belle Williams 6 March 1889. He says his Grandfather, Littleton Daniel III, had a brother, William Morton Daniel, who married M. R. B. Williams on 4 June 1882 in Hill County, Texas. (Could this be William Martin Daniel instead of William Morton Daniel?) Yes it was.

Also, William Martin Daniel's younger sister, Martha Frances, was married to George Washington Hart whose mother was a Littleton.

W. M. Daniel was an Episcopalian minister. He was not in good health.
He is buried in the Pecan Cemetary near Purves, TX. (To clear up some of the
confusion about what church he belonged to, the Methodist church used to be
called " Methodist Episcopalian")

William married Louisa J. Cline and they had four children. After her death he married Mary R. Belle Williams and they had six children -- Ollie, Bertha, Jessie, Hunley, Mary, and May. William's first wife, Louisa J. Cline died while they were still living in Lawrence County, Missouri. He left their four children with Louisa's sister, Betty, and William went to Hill County, Texas to visit some of his brothers and sisters who had moved to Texas. While he was there he met his second wife, Mary R. Belle Williams who was staying with her brother, John Williams and his wife, Georgia McNatt (I think Georgia may be a sister of Lucinda McNatt, the wife of Hearl Wiggins Daniel). I don't know if William married Mary Belle on this trip to Texas or after he went back to Missouri to retrieve his children. After he returned to Texas with his children, they moved to Arkansas where Mary Belle owned property she had inherited from her parents. They lived on this place for about a year, sold the place, and moved back to Hill County, Texas. Three of the Daniel brothers, Walter, Hearl and William moved to Erath County where they all purchased farms. William and Hearl's farms adjoined and if Walter's didn't join, it was very near. William lived on this farm for about a year and then he and several friends decided they would go to the territory of Washington. William sold his farm to Joseph Harrison Caudle who took possesion on the 1st day of January 1888. William then moved over onto Hearl's pasturewhere he stretched a tent and his family lived in this tent for three months while they were making preparations to leave for Washington Territory. There were about 16 wagons in the train that headed out for Washington. The trip took 6-7 months. They settled at or near Ellensburg, Washington which is in the Yakima Valley and near the Cascade Mountains. That winter, all were in good health except William who had a bad cough from a cold he caught while helping dig some people out of a snow slide. His doctor told him he needed to get out of that country, so he sold his teams and wagons, loaded all of their household goods on the train and went back to Hill County, Texas. From there they went back to Erath County, Texas where he bought a farm joining the Warren place on the north. This place is located about a mile east of Purves, Texas. They lived there until January 1894. They then moved to a farm near Wilson which is located about five miles south of Purves and is in Comanche County,Texas. When they lived there, the town was called Center. It had a grist mill and a store or two. Today it is refered to as the Wilson Community and no longer exist as a town. It is on the same road that goes in front of the old Walter Wooten Daniel farm. This farm at Wilson is where William Martin Daniel died. He was buried in the Pecan Cemetery where his brother Walter Wooten Daniel and two of William's children were already buried. His wife, Mary Belle sold a cow and calf to buy his grave marker from Mr. Lofferty.

In a letter dated 7 July 1965 from his daughter and second wife, Jesse Isabelle Daniel Caudle to her son, Jarvis Daniel Caudle, says that William was the pastor at the Live Oak Church for many years.

bullet  Burial Notes:

Pecan Cemetery has a Historical Marker --placed July 23, 1992. The following information is from their application.
The Church was called Friendship Baptist Church. It served the community from 1884 to 1915, when they joined with the Purvis Baptist Church. It was the 2nd church formed in the area and was begun 24th day of July 1884 on 3 1/2 acres donated by James W. McKenzie and wife for burial purposes. The building was torn down 1922. The materials were used to build the tabernacle at pecan cemetery. The Tabernacle is built a ways behind where the old church stood. The Pecan Cemetery Endowment Corporation was formed 1961 to provide perpetual care.

  • Surname Name: Last name: Daniel. This very early patronymic surname, now recorded in over hundred different spellings from Daniel, Daniels, and Danielli as examples, to Danelet, Danilevich, and Daszkiewicz , and found in every European country from the medieval period onwards, derives from the Hebrew male personal name "Daniel". The name means "God is my judge" and its long popularity is associated with the famous biblical story "The book of Daniel", and in particular how his life was saved in the lions cage. The personal name was born by both a second century Christian martyr and a 9th century hermit, but its greatest growth period is associated with the famous "Crusades" of the 12th century. Soldiers or pilgrims, returning from the various unsuccessful expeditions to free the Holy Land from the Saracens, named their children with biblical names, as a reminder of their fathers exploits. The result was an explosion in names of Hebrew origin, which themselves developed quickly into surnames, many traditional names being lost for ever. Rather confusingly these early (sur)names which include spellings such as Abraham, Isaac, and Joseph, were therefore Hebrew but not Jewish. England was the first country to adopt both surnames and register recordings, and it is in that country that the earliest recordings are to be found. The very first recorded spelling of the hereditary surname anywhere in the world, is believed to be that of Roger Daniel, in the famous Domesday Book for the county of Sussex, England. This was during the reign of King William 1st, known as "William, The Conqueror", 1066 - 1087. Throughout the centuries surnames have continued to "develop" in almost every country, often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
