Some surnames connected to the ROSNAGEL branch:

LISSNER
EMERY

Research on the ROSNAGEL branch is very slow going. The name is far more common than I originally thought (figures, don't it) and "my" ROSNAGEL's are just plain elusive. I don't remember my grandfather Henry ROSNAGEL speaking of his family, but my grandmother Marie KIBBEE ROSNAGEL did. I've also learned quite a bit from my father and uncle. I also knew my grandfather's sister Martha ROSNAGEL MASTERS WOELFL. She used to visit from New Jersey with her second husband Alfred WOELFL. After the deaths of Uncle Al and Grandpa in 1973, Aunt Nana (that is what we called Martha) moved from Runnemede, Camden County, New Jersey, to live with Grandma in Maple Heights, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. From these sources I knew that Grandpa and Aunt Nana had two other siblings, brother Otto and sister Olga. I also knew that their father's name was also Otto but he may have been born Adolph. It is also a family belief that the original spelling of the last name was ROSSNAGEL. That is very possible but I have not found any documentation (city directories don't count as documentation for this one!). My father and uncle said they thought their grandmother's maiden name was LISSNER or LISTNER but they couldn't remember her first name. Aunt Olga was the only one not born in the United States . . . no one knew where but, then, somebody, was born "on the boat". But one thing was certain . . . they were German. Well . . . that's what Great-grandpa said, anyway. Great-grandma and great-grandpa did speak German as did their four children. My mother and I both knew enough high school German to be reasonably sure of that much, anyway. I have some theories but only time will tell . . .

Otto ROSNAGEL (or is it Adolph ROSSNAGEL?) was born 28-Oct-1875 in Warsaw, Poland. His parents were Jacob ROSNAGEL and Wilma LUETKE (as listed on the record for his second marriage) or Wilma DTKA (as listed on his death certificate). According to Otto's death certificate, both of his parents were born in Warsaw, Poland. I'm not sure how much to trust the death certificate. I'm not sure who the informant is. She gave her name as Mrs. Ann TANO. She may be the daughter of his second wife.

Otto's first wife was Olga LISSNER, daughter of Robert LISSNER and Rose SHEFFLER. Her parents are listed as being born in Germany on her death certificate. Olga was born 19-Jul-1883 in Warsaw, Poland. I have no idea where or when Otto and Olga were married but my best guess is around 1900 in Poland or Russia. They had four children: Olga born 1901 - 1902 in either Russia or Poland; Martha born 03-Apr-1904 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio; Otto born 02-Dec-1905 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio; and Henry (my grandfather) born 26-Nov-1907 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Otto and Olga ROSNAGEL immigrated to the United States around 1902 with daughter Olga and were naturalized around 1912. Just to make life interesting, Otto and wife Olga are both listed in the 1920 Census as being 44 years old - which would give them a birth year of about 1875. They also are listed as being born in Russia with their native tongue being German. The parent's information is the same for both of them. Daughter Olga also is shown as being born in Russia and speaking German.

Olga LISSNER ROSNAGEL died 13-Jul-1936 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. She was buried 16-Jul-1936 in Highland Park Cemetery, Beachwood, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Otto ROSNAGEL remarried on 02-Mar-1937 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. His bride's name was Barbara HEILMAN BOSS SCHAAFF. Otto ROSNAGEL died 17-Dec-1944 at his farm in Pierpont Township, Ashtabula County, Ohio. He was buried on 20-Dec-1944 in Pierpont, Ashtabula County, Ohio.

In the 1920 Census Otto is listed as a shop laborer. I also understand from my father that Otto once owned a gas station in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio.

There are many mysteries to unravel about the ROSNAGEL's . . .
