These photos are all of the same man, William E. Hawkins, who was elected mayor of Red Wing, MN in 1880 and 1886. He also served as fire chief and alderman.

The Thomas Hawkins Family arrived in New York from England in the early 1830's. They may have lived in New York City in 1830, and later possibly in Albany NY. Thomas was a machinist and moved to Mobile, Alabama in the 1850's, where he set up a large machine shop.  His son, William E., was living in Southport (near Elmira), Chemung County, NY in 1850 and was working as a painter. He  settled in Red Wing, Minnesota, in 1855 and his brother, George W., came after 1868. They were partners in a carriage and sign painting and paint selling business. A third son, John T. Hawkins, taught at Annapolis according to family lore.

The handwriting on Hawkins family photos is that of Odila Hawkins Warren, who wanted to pass on the Hawkins and Burkard family histories to the next generation.
