TANCOOK ISLAND RECREATION CENTRE
The first community gathering spot on Tancook was called Gideon Hall which can still be seen today sitting on the hillside opposite the Government Wharf. Most islanders today still remember the dances and gatherings that went on inside this building. After many years this building began to depreciate and was replaced in June of 1976 with the Tancook Recreational Centre, a 40' x 60' structure costing $55,000. Today this is the site for the famous Herring Chokers Picnic, an annual event open to the public, occurring every August, the Christmas Concert put on each year by the students of the elementary school, weekly card parties, bingo, wedding receptions, showers, craft sales, and any other event that is attended by the island people.
