John Sherman and Priscilla McDowell

The Sherman Family


In 1900, John Sherman was living with his family in the 1st Ward of Millvale Borough, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. His record appears on line 43 of written page 4.

John reported his birth date to be July 1845. He reported his birthplace as well as the birthplace of his parents to be Pennsylvania. He reported his occupation to be Mill Labor.

With John was his wife, Priscilla (McDowell), born in Pennsylvania in February 1851. Priscilla and John reported that they had been married for 30 years. Priscilla reported that she was the mother of eight children, seven of whom were still living, and five of whom were living in the household. The children, all born in Pennsylvania, were:

  1. Albert, born May 1876, Day Laborer,
  2. Frank, born September 1878, also a Day Laborer
  3. John, born in August 1884
  4. Agnes, born in November 1891, and
  5. Samuel, born in July, 1893
Also in the home was David, a one-year-old grandson, born in July 1898

Agnes Rose Sherman, later Agnes Rose Banner, died on April 18,1921, and was buried in the Saint Thomas Section of All Saints Braddock Catholic Cemetery.

Samuel Sherman's daughter-in-law was Ruth Rogers, daughter of Frank Ellis Rogers and Nellie (Marsh) Rogers. Ruth was born in June, 1920 and died on March 12, 1939, when her daughter, Janet , was only three months old. Ruth Sherman was laid to rest in the Garrison Divisions of Woodlawn Cemetery, Penn Avenue, Wilkinsburg, PA.

John H. Sherman died in 1911. His obituary read:

SHERMAN - On Saturday, February 25, 1911 at 9:30 a.m. JOHN H. SHERMAN, formerly of South Side Pittsburgh, aged 65 years.
      Funeral services at his late home 3?5 Crosby Street, North Braddock, PA, Tuesday morning, February 28 at 8 o'clock. Requiem solemn high mass at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Braddock, PA 9:30 o'clock. Friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend.

Priscilla McDowell Sherman died on April 25, 1912 and was buried in the Saint Thomas Section of All Saints Braddock Catholic Cemetery.
