Tasker Family History - Oxfordshire

Taskers in Oxfordshire

Of the 224 IGI Tasker records for Oxfordshire, the first are at Hook Norton, a north Oxfordshire village now famous for its brewery. Alice and Elizabeth were born there in 1550 and 1552, daughters of William Tasker. Probably William's brother, Walter Tasker was also having children in Hook Norton: Anthony in 1568 and Annis in 1573. Then in 1585 Elizabeth was born, possibly to James whose daughter Margery was christened two years later. There were to be Tasker families in Hook Norton all the way through to the mid 1700s, with a William dying there in 1832, aged 89.

Other early Oxfordshire Taskers include Richard, who married an anonymous lady in 1558 at Alkerton on the Warwickshire border; Ann who married 'John Laurence of Edgcott' at Wardington (near Banbury) in 1572; Joane who married Thomas Carter at Banbury in 1581; and 'Coristofer' who married Alice Tredwell at Epwell in 1591, where Richard died in 1606. As Epwell and Alkerton are only a couple of miles apart, it seems probable that Christopher was the son of Richard. They were also ancestors of a Tasker tribe spanning north Oxfordshire, south Warwickshire and even parts of Gloucestershire, and continuing to the present day. The Shenington Taskers are outlined in Gloucestershire, as the village has only been part of Oxfordshire for the past few hundred years, although it actually runs into Alkerton, and is less than 2 miles from Epwell.

James Tasker, born about 1785 in Oxfordshire, was tried at the Berkshire Assizes for stealing a pig. Found guilty, has was transported to Tasmania in 1820. He may have left a family behind in England, but then married Mary Smythe from Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland in 1831 and they had 4 children.
