Tasker Family History - Warwickshire

Taskers in Warwickshire

Warwickshire has 499 Tasker records on the IGI, with a significant number before 1600 due to a thriving Tasker tribe in south Warwickshire. The picture is confused, however, as some of the villages in the area have 'moved' between Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire and Warwickshire over time, making tracking families an interesting pastime.

The first recorded christening was on 27 March 1563, when Margery, the daughter of Richard Tasker was christened at Halford. However the Worcestershire record states the same event took place on 29 March at Tredington, Worcestershire. As the two villages are only a couple of miles apart, and now both are in Warwickshire, maybe the odd two days don't matter too much!

Also in Halford, William Tasker and his wife-to-be were born about 1557 and 1561, marrying there in 1588. And slightly later in 1564, John Tasker was born, who was to marry Cecily Hunt in Honington or Ettington – there are records for both villages, and each is about two miles from Halford, in the opposite directions.

The records for Tysoe, a village five miles east of Halford/Tredington, and only two miles west of Alkerton, Epwell and Shennington in Oxfordshire, go back to 1568 when John Tasker was christened on 7 May. The Tysoe Taskers were to last for over 150 years, spawning Brailes Taskers which lasted until the mid 1800s. John and his wife Joan had Margaret (1575), Mary (1578) and Thomas on 17 October 1581. His brother William had Titus (1575), Ann (1578) and another Thomas, on 17 March 1581. A third Thomas had died on 5 April 1578, but whether he was a son or an older relative is not yet clear. And an Elizabeth was born about 1576, to either John or William.

Meanwhile in Halford, William christened a fourth Thomas on 31 May 1587, then married in 1588, then had Nicholas in 1589 and Marie in 1590. And just down the road in Tredington, John Tasker's daughter Anna was christened in 1593.

Back in Tysoe, 1590 – 1604 saw 6 more Taskers christened, children of John or Richard, presumably both themselves un-recorded children of either the earlier John or William.

And so the complex web of Taskers developed, explained more fully here.
