There
seems to be no record of the arrival of the Chivers family in Tasmania.
They are believed to have arrived from Wales soon after 1820, they had
settled in the Bothwell area by 1829. George and his wife Martha had nine
children.
George
was licensee of the "Spring Hill Inn" 1838 - 1844, and the "Young
Queen Inn" in Dalrymple Street, Bothwell 1847-1850.
He
lived on a property known as "Abergavenny"
which was situated between Hollow Tree and Apsley.
It
is probable that George Chivers was from Abergavenny in Monmouthshire,
South Wales. His near neighbour, Edward Nicholas was from the the
Abergevanny region in Monmouthshire.
Nicholas'
property in Bothwell was "Nant", which is Welsh for valley.
Nicholas
arrived aboard the "Grace" in 1821, neither he nor any other
members of the party with whom he travelled (including wife, children
and brother) were listed amongst the passengers arriving on the "Grace".
It
is possible that George Chivers was with them.
George
died at Bothwell in 1875, his wife, Martha had died 18 years earlier,
both are buried in the Bothwell cemetery.
