Abraham
Cooper, agricultural labourer together his wife, Catherine and children,
John, Mary, Margaret and Abraham arrived in Melbourne aboard the "Hilton"
7th July 1854. They had departed Liverpool 1st April 1854.
The
Cooper family originated in County Wicklow Ireland and travelled to Australia
as assisted immigrants.
On
the 12th July 1854 Abraham and his family were expelled from the depot for
refusing to go to Gippsland.
By
1858 Abraham Cooper (snr.) occupied a property known as "Lauriston Run"
and owned by John Effington Lawrence. This property was in the Georgetown
district.
Abraham
died 10th September 1871 in Georgetown his age was given as 72. There is no
record of the presence of Abraham's wife, Catherine, or his elder son, John,
in Tasmania.
By
1860 land at "Tip'o'gowrie" adjacent to properties occupied by Abraham
Cooper was occupied by Edward Collins and Francis McIvor. Edward and Francis
were the spouses of Mary Ann and Margaret Cooper respectively.
There
is no record of the marriages of Mary Ann and Edward Collins or Margaret and
Francis McIvor in Tasmania. Similarly there is no record of the birth of Richard,
the oldest son of Edward and Mary Ann Collins, the records of these events
are believed to have been amongst the records of the Sidmouth "Kirk"
which were lost in a fire.
