Joseph
Oakley was born 5th February 1810 in Chertsey, Surrey, England to James and
Sarah (nee White) Oakley. He was baptised on 28th February 1810 in St.
Peter's church,
Chertsey.
On
5th July 1832 Joseph was tried at the Old Bailey(Middlesex
gaol delivery) on a charge of stealing a coat and saddle from his former master.
His plea was that he "did it through despair". He was found guilty
and sentenced to transportation for seven years.
Joseph
departed Portsmouth aboard the "Lotus" on 13th December 1832 and
arrived in Hobart on 16th May 1833.
The
record of a marriage of Joseph to Sarah Ann Smith and the birth of Martha
Elizabeth Oakley in 1833/34 have not been found.
Valuation
records for the Oatlands district show that Joseph and Sarah lived there,
Joseph worked as a blacksmith.
Joseph
and Elizabeth had nine children:
(i)
Martha Elizabeth Oakley,
born 1833/34. She married Joseph Barwick, on 23rd November
1854 in Oatlands, born circa 1832 in Great Mongeham, (son of Edward
Barwick and Elizabeth Jarman) died 20th October 1903, at "Woodlands",
Tea Tree. Martha died 29th July 1899 in Hobart.
(ii)
Sarah Ann Harriett Oakley, born 9th March 1840 in Oatlands. She
married Edward William Metcalfe Barwick, on 2nd March 1859, in Oatlands,
born 9th December 1836, at sea, (son of Edward Barwick and Elizabeth Jarman)
died 21st March 1895 in Colebrook. Sarah died13th March 1890 in
Hobart. Both Sarah and Edward are buried at Tea Tree.
(iii)
Sarah Ann Frances Oakley, born 5th June 1842 in Launceston.
She married Phillip Murray Jones, on 21st August 1860 in Oatlands,
born 1840, (son of Robert Jones and Sarah Blinkworth) died 12th November
1916. Sarah died 26th April 1919 in New Norfolk
(iv)
John James Oakley born 7th March 1844 in Oatlands. He married
Elizabeth Gangell, on 25th August 1870, in Sorell, born 13th
June 1849 in Sorell, (daughter of Jacob Gangell and Elizabeth Gell) died 11th
June 1932 at "Oakville" Rekuna. John purchased land at Tea Tree
and built his home "Oaklington".
Tea Tree historian, Robert Scott, described John as wearing his "top
hat, a long white beard, smoking a cigar, (he) was a familiar figure at shows,
sales,races etc. He was an excellent judge of all stock and conducted a Lincoln-Sheep
Stud for a long time......" John Oakley died 27th
April 1940, in Hobart.

William Henry Oakley, born circa 1846. He married

Sarah Aitchison on 21st January 1871, in house of Edward Metcalfe Barwick
at Tea Tree, born circa 1827, (daughter of George Aitchison and Sarah Nelson)
died 20th September 1871 in Oatlands.
(b)
Margaret McDowell (nee O'Brien) married 11th March 1894, in Pontville, born
circa 1862.
William
Henry Oakley worked as a drover in New South Wales around 1880. He died
17th August 1921 in Hobart and is buried at Tea Tree.
(vi)
Edward Thomas Oakley, born 26th March 1848 in Oatlands. He married
Mary Jane Powell, on 30th October 1875, in Carlton Victoria, born 1857,
Fryer's Creek, Victoria, (daughter of William Powell and Jane Thompson).
(vii)Georgina
Rachel Oakley born 16th May 1852 in Oatlands. She married George
Gangell, on 11th March 1872, in Sorell, born 18th March 1846 in
Forcett, (son of Jacob Gangell and Elizabeth Gell) died 6th March
1936 at Battery Point. Georgina died 9th March 1874 in Orielton

Frederick Charles Oakley, born 16th May 1852 at Oatlands. He married
(a)
Sarah Gangell, on 1st June 1876, in Brighton, born 25 Jan 1854,
at Brighton, (daughter of Jacob Gangell and Elizabeth Gell) died 29th
December 1902 at Bushy Park.
(b)
Catherine Eliza Clark, married 26th August 1904, in Melbourne, Victoria, born
15th December 1856 at "Redlands", Plenty (daughter of William Clark
and Catherine (Elizabeth) Cantilen) died 22nd February 1950 at
"Valleyfield", New Norfolk. Frederick died 9th November
1928 at "Valleyfield", New Norfolk.
(ix)
Louis Joseph Oakley, born 6th October1854 in Oatlands. He
married Marie Ellen Scott, on 10th March 1883, in Mission Church, Calcutta,
India, (daughter of John Scott and unknown spouse).
Joseph
and Sarah Oakley moved from Oatlands to "Oaklington", the
property owned by their eldest son.
Sarah
died there on 18th October 1883, she is buried at Tea Tree.
Joseph
travelled to India, to visit his youngest son, Lewis Joseph, who had married
in Calcutta. Joseph died in Darjeeling on 12th October 1895 and was buried
there on 13th October 1895.
