Eliza Vincent was
born in England circa 1816.
She and her six siblings,
Mary Ann (born c
1804), John Jubilee (born circa 1808), William (born circa 1812), Harriett
(born 1814), Caroline (born 1821) and Lucy (born 1819) arrived in Tasmania
with their parents John and Susannah (nee Rivers) Vincent on board the "Elizabeth"
in 1823.
Another two children
George Rivers (born circa 1823) and Matilda (born cira 1825) were baptised
in New Norfolk..
By July 1825 John
Vincent had taken up a grant of 500 acres at Sorell Springs, York Plains.
He requested a further grant of 200 -300 acres of rocky land on which he planned
to build a corn mill, his request was refused.
John Vincent relocated
to Bothwell, in 1828 he was the licensee of the "Norwood Inn". By
1831 he was proprietor
of the "Bothwell Inn", had purchased 300 acres of land and been
granted another 1,000 acres. He owned a stone house and out-buildings valued
at £300 at York Plains and requested an additional grant to build an
inn at Spring Hill.
He was allowed the
additional grant of 500 acres and given 10 acres at Spring Hill to build his
inn.
By 1833 Vincent had
spent £2000 on his inn at Spring Hill and made the area safe for travellers.
The inn, formerly known as "The London Inn", still stands on Spring
Hill it has been renamed "Tedworth".
John Vincent had
the "Royal Oak Inn" at Green
Ponds then relocated to Bagdad where he was licensee of the "Bagdad Inn".
By November 1848 he was licensee of the "Exchange Inn" in Collins
Street, Hobart.
John Vincent died
at Brighton on 27th October 1857, his widow Susannah died at Greenponds 12th
September 1860.
