65. Richard Sackett , Jr.-711 (Richard , Richard , Jonathan , John , John ) was born on 15 Jul 1749. He died in 1789.

of New Milford, Conn., and Arlington, VT.

He appears to have been a well-to-do husbandman. On Jan. 4, 1770, nearly six months previous to reaching his majority, he purchased from his father, for the sum of "Four Hundred Pounds lawful money of the Colony" of Connecticut, fifty acres of land adjoining the homestead farm at New Milford. The deed given him is in the hand writing of his uncle, Dr. John Sackett, who is also one of the witnesses to the signing of it. This deed is now in the possession of Mr. James D. Sackett, of Cleveland, O., to whom it was recently presented by a kinsman whom he visited at Poultney, VT. This Richard Sackett is not shown by public records to have been especially active in public affairs. On the death of his father, in 1771, he came into possession of several pieces of real estate at New Milford, including the homestead farm. In 1775 he disposed of the last piece of real estate at New Milford, and became a permanent resident of Arlington, VT., where he was an active member of a military company commanded by Capt. Ebenezer Wallace, in the ranks of which he participated in one or more campaigns during the war of the Revolution. He died at Arlington in the spring of 1789, survived by his wife Martha, three sons and a daughter. On June 24, following, Mrs. Sackett gave birth to a second daughter. - [Weygant, p. 163-154]

Richard married Martha Benedict-711sp daughter of Jonathan Benedict and Lucy Castle before 1776. Martha was born in 1756. She died in 1812.

Thomas Benedict (or Bennydick), the colonist ancestor of Martha Benedict Sackett, was a native of Notinghamshire, Eng-
Page 164
land, and came to Massachusetts Bay in 1638, and there married Mary Bridgman. They lived for several years at Southold, and in 1662 resided at Jamaica, L.I. Still later they were at Norwalk, Conn., where Mr. Benedict was made a deacon if the church.

John Benedict, one of the nine children of Thomas and Mary Bridgman Benedict, was born at Southold, L.I., and removed with his parents to Norwalk, Conn., where on Nov. 11, 1670, he was married to Phebe Gregory. He was there sworn a freeman in 1680, succeeded his father as deacon, and from 1689 to 1699 held the office of selectman.

Joseph Benedict, one of the seven children of John and Phebe Gregory Benedict, was born at Norwalk, Conn., where he was married to his first wife Anne, previous to whose death, in 1716, they removed to Ridgefield, Conn. There on Mar. 21, 1720, he was married to his second wife, Mary.

Jonathan Benedict, 1723-1800, son of Joseph Benedict and his wife Mary, was married to Lucy Castle, who was the mother of his ten oldest children, and who died at North Milford, VT. Mr. Benedict shortly after the death of his wife Lucy, moved to Manchester and was there married to widow Margary Seelye (Pinnock).

Martha Benedict, 1756-1812, eldest daughter of Jonathan and Lucy Castle Benedict, some two years after the death of her husband, Richard Sackett, in 1789, was married to Jason Kellogg.

Richard and Martha had the following children:

+ 116 M i Richard Sackett , 3rd-1680
+ 117 F ii Lucy Sackett-1681
+ 118 M iii Jonathan Sackett-1682
+ 119 M iv Anson Sackett-1683
+ 120 F v Hester Sackett-1684

68. Mary Sackett-721 (John , Richard , Jonathan , John , John ) died in Sep 1824.

One source has the birth of Mary as 17 Nov 1730. However, that would make her 57 years old at the birth of Benjamin in 1787.

Mary married Alexander McKay-721sp on 2 Sep 1760 in Amenia, Dutchess Co., NY.. Alexander was born on 22 Feb 1731/1732. He died in 1812.

Weygant has his surname as MacKey. However, current researchers use the surname MacKay or McKay.

Alexander McKay, while in Lenox, MA., was one of 103 men who signed a protest document against the British on 14 July 1774. They vowed not to buy any British goods, to disassociate with anyone who did, to manufacture and make as much goods as they could on their own, to promote peace and keep from rioting. The original document is in a safe at the Lenox Town Library. Alexander, Mary, and their first 9 children had moved to Pennsylvania probably by 1776 as part of the Susquehanna Co. who hoped to settle there. They lived in the area between Wilkes-Barre and Scranton, PA. called Wyoming. Because of problems with Indians, British and internal problems, they ultimately had to relinquish their land. Alexander was later refunded in Connecticut for his loss. Before the family left Pennsylvania, they were in the Wyoming Valley Massacre which started on 26 July 1778. Tories and Indians descended on the villages, and the families fled to the forts. Alexander and family went to Ft. Lackawanna and remained there until the enemy seized the fort. They had to stay there several more days before they were given permission to leave either by parole or go to Canada. They chose parole. With little possessions, a red mark on each face which was a sign of their parole, and most of the family with measles (including Alexander), the family walked back to New York. Mary, wife of Alexander and pregnant with Daniel, carried the little ones and Alexander across the Susquehanna River when they arrived there.
