The part concerning the history of Newtowne is in the first three images. Below the text of two of the sections are maps. These maps view the area from opposite directions.
Massachusetts Bay Colony | Boston and Newtowne | Settlement in Newtowne |
Cambridge (Newtowne) in 1660 | Map of Newtowne |
"Cambridge in 1660" is a conjectural view of how the area would have looked in 1660. I could not get a scan of the text under the artist's rendering clear enough to be able to read the text in an image small emough to load in a reasonable amount of time. The text reads:
"This conjectural view of Cambridge in 1660 is a romantic impression; none of the structures
shown survived long enough to be recorded. Harvard College is at the bottom and the court-
house, on the site of the present subway block, is to the right of center. The _____ Creek was
used for shipping until the construction of Memorial Drive in 19--. Winthrop Square, the
location of this marker, is the surfaced area with two trees in the center of the view."
For the map of Newtowne, I have added a red arrow to point to the location believed to be that of Simon Sackett's house.
Don's notes concerning the location of
the Sackett house:
"Weygant information mentions
the house being on the north side of Winthrop in the middle of the block.
between Brighton and Dunster Streets. ... Weygant calls the streets "Winthrop"
"Dunster" and "Brighton".
Today, on the sign posts, there
are notations that in 1631, Winthrop was called "Long Street" Dunster was
called "Water Street", and Brighton was called "Wood Street". As you
can see on the little map, the Sackett House must be the one in the middle
of Long Street, on the north side between Water Street and Wood Street."
