of Springfield, Mass.

[He] was a noted landscape gardener. He laid out Forest Park, in Springfield, which is one of the most attractive city parks in New England. The following is related as an illustration of his "inventiveness" as well as his wit: One day he was driving with a friend, who asked him, out of curiosity, how he would plan a road to the top of a certain hill they were passing. "Well," said Mr. Sackett, with a twinkle in his eye, "I should turn in some cows awhile and watch how they got up."
---------------------------
Justin Sackett, an extensive contractor of Springfield, was born in Wesfield, Sept 5, 1814, His grandfather Joel Sackett, was an old resident of Westfield, having moved thither from Agawam when that village was flooded. Mr. Sackett's father, Elijah Sackett, was born in Westfield and lived there until 1817, when he came to W Springfield.
His wife Cynthia, whose family name was the same as his own, bore him five children: Israel, deceased; Clarissa, the wife of Noah Ashby, of W. Springfield, Justin, Cynthia, deceased; and Elijah. Justin, having attended school at Ashleyville, W. Springfield, came to Springfield when a boy, and hired himself to a farmer for a number of years. In 1840, he went to work in the old Springfield cemetery, where he was employed for thirteen years. He then went to St. Johnsbury, Vt., and took the contract for laying out a cemetery there. Having complete charge of this work, Mr. Sackett gained a considerable reputation for skill and executive ability. The tracks and dike of Hampden Park were built by him, the length of the two tracks being a mile and a half. He here employed a force of thirty men. At the same time Mr. Sackett was busily engaged in fulfilling a contract for the Northampton Hospital, and one-half of each day was given to the supervision of the respective works. He continued taking contracts for earth works, and in 1859-1860 he was superintendent of the city streets. For nine years he held this important position, which he finally resigned. His main line of work was building of streets putting in sewers, and grading lawns, which gave employment for a large number of men, and was the means of supplying many famillies. This especial work he continued until 1892, when his last contract, which was for the building of the Forest Park roads, was completed. He was one of the originators and directors of the Oak Grove Cemetery, which he took charge of personally, and which was mainly laid off upon his own ground. Mr. Sackett married Miss Sophia O. Marsh,, a daughter of Mr. Apollo Marsh, who was a soldier in the War of 1812 and a representative of the old and well-known Marsh family of Springfield.
Three children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Sackett: Edward, the eldest, who is a railroad man and engaged in the city; Alice, the wife of Mr. Charles Rust; and James, who has succeeded his father in business. The family attend the Unitarian church. Mr. Sackett, though formerly a Whig and later a Republican voter, has not been an active politician. Mr. Sackett has owned a large amount of real estate in and about the city. He has also built several residences. His own home, which is surrounded by a lawn covering an acre of ground, was built in 1861, and was then considered a long way out, though now in the heart of the city. The family still occupy this attractive old place, endeared by the associations of so many years. Mr. Sackett was for some time a member of the Board of Public Works, in which body he was an acknowledged authority. From: Biographical Review Leading Citizens of Hampden County Vol 2, page 1003

Weygant, pages 220-221:
Charles Taintor, of South Wales, came to America in 1638, and settled at Fairfield, Conn., where he
engaged in business, in connection with which he made frequent trips to European ports. In October, 1654, the vessel in which he was crossing the ocean, foundered and he was drowned.

Joseph Taintor, 1613-1690, son of above, was born in Wales. He preceded his father to America by
several months, coming over on the ship Confidence, which sailed from Southampton, Eng., April 24,
1638. About 1640, he was married to Mary Gray, 1619-1705, daughter of Nicholas Gray and his wife
Jane, all of whom had crossed with him on the ship Confidence, from England to America in 1638.

Jonathan Taintor, 1654-1712, son of above Joseph and Mary Gray Taintor, was married, in 1681, to
Elisabeth Warren, 16__-1692, daughter of Daniel Warren, of Watertown. In 1702 he was married to his second wife, Mary Randall, of Watertown, who survived him . He participated in King Philip's War, and is credited with being in the Great Swamp fight in 1675.

Deacon Joseph Taintor, 1688-1764, third child of above Jonathan and Elisabeth Warren Taintor, was
born at Watertown, Mass., and was married, Apr. 20, 1815 [sic], to Thankful Barrett, of Marlborough. They had ten children.

John Taintor, 1716-1805, of Marlborough and Shrewsbury, in Mass, Woodstock, Conn., Boston,
Mass., and Halifax, N. H., son of Deacon Joseph Taintor, was married ad Sudberry, Mass., by Rev.
Israel Loring, Jan. 1, 1739, to Hannah Goodell, who lived but a few months thereafter. On May 20,
1741, he was married to his second wife, Sarah Ward, daughter of Obediah Ward.

Joseph Taintor, 1745-179_, of Shrewsbury, Mass., and Norwich, Conn., son of above mentioned John and Sarah Ward Taintor, was married to Dorcas Post, of Norwich. He was an active participant in the war of the Revolution, serving in company commanded by Capt. Phineas Stern.

Fanny Taintor, 1783-1848, daughter of Joseph and Dorcas Post Taintor, was married first to James
Levaughn, and lived in Genesee, N. Y., and had sons James and William. Her second husband was
Lory Smith, of Hartford, Conn., and their daughter, Frances Ann Smith was the first wife of Loren
Sacket.

Loren and Frances had the following children:

  2140 F i Frances Adelaide Sackett-2878

of Hartford, Conn.

Frances Adelaide Sackett enjoys the distinction of being the first woman in America to serve as president of a veteran regimental organization. The Hartford Daily Times, in issue of Sept. 14, 1899, devotes considerable space to an account of annual reunion of the Eleventh Connecticut Veterand, from which we copy the following items:

Miss F. Adelaide Sackett of this city was unanimously elected president of the regimental association. This course was taken on the motion of General Horne. It was in reciginition of the fact that Miss Sackett's brother, Captain William H. Sackett, gave up his life for the Union cause at Petersburg. The election was most enthusiastic. Captain Quein spoke of the bravery of the captain, whom he considered one of the most heroic of Connecticut soldiers. He was glad that the sister of Captain Sackett had been elected president.

Miss Sackett, the new president of the association, has been identified with Grand Army work in this city since the inception of the order, and is widely known throughout the state on account of her identity with the Woman's Relief Corps. She is the past treasurer and president of Robert O. Tyler Corps and has held the office of Junior department president and department treasurer of the State, also aide on the staff of the National President. Miss Sackett is the receiving clerk in the office of the Hartford Street Railway Company, and possesses executive ability of a high order. The election came to her totally unexpected, and her effort to escape the office was overruled by unanimous vote of the old soldiers, who remembered her brother's courage and sacrifice on the field with the proudest comradeship.

The Times of Mar, 26, in a review of the Hartford Street Railway, says:

Miss F. Adelaide Sackett, who has been with the company for twenty-one years, is the senior attache of the office corps. She holds the position of chief receiving clerk, which involves the original custody of all moneys turned in by the conductors. Miss Sackett began her business career in the actuarial department of the Insurance Commissioner's office, receiving her appointment under the first commissioner, Dr. George S. Miller, now superintendent of agencies of Phoenix Mutual Life. Miss Sackett has a thorough knowledge of business and has met every duty in the positions which she has occupied with competency and success.

Her business qualifications have demonstrated in more instances than can be pointed out woman's fitness to engage in the active pursuits of life.

  2141 F ii Sarah Jane Sackett-2879.
        Sarah married Charles Daniels
  2142 M iii Joseph Taintor Sackett-2880 was born on 30 Nov 1839.

Mr. Sackett is a veteran of the Civil War, having served three years as a non-commissioned officer and color bearer of the 13th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He participated in the battles of Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, Ringold Gap, and many other engagements. He was mustered out of the service June 18, 1864, the day that his brother, Capt. William H. Sackett, of the 11th Connecticut Volunteers, was killed in front of Petersburgh, Va.

Joseph married Elisabeth L. Crocker-2880sp daughter of David H. Crocker and Julia E. Cushman on 26 Feb 1866.

The official record of his military service reads in part as follows:

"Wm. H. Sackett, first enlisted Apr. 25, 1861; mustered in as private Co. A, 3d Conn. Inf., May 11, 1861; mustered out Aug. 12, 1861. Mustered in as Second Lieut. Co. I, 11th Conn. Inf., Dec. 14, 1861; promoted to First Lieut., June 2, 1862; promoted to Captain, Oct. 22, 1862. Killed at Petersburgh, Va., June 18, 1864."

He was an active participant in the battles of First Bull Run. Newberne, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburgh, seige of Suffolk, Cold Harbor, Petersburgh, and several minor engagements. Colonel S. B. Horne, in an address delivered on battlefield of Antietam, on occasion of dedication of Connecticut state monument, said:

"One of our best and most loving captains was stricken down June 18, 1864. I refer to Captain William H. Sackett. . . . Upon this field, by his cool bravery and gallantry he was at once promoted. . . . He fell in the din of battle, a heroic leader among heroic men. We loved him because of his moral life, his excellent character and habits, his strict discipline, and cordiality of friendship. His military history illustrates a life of devotion to his country, fidelity to his oath of office, courage in the face of danger, and a noble example in the discharge of his duties."

There is a conflict in the information for the parents of Electa Dewey. Weygant gives her father as Alonzo Dewey. However, the 1898 Dewey Genealogy (pg. 933) gives a different parent for Electa, viz.; #8236, Caleb Dewey, 1779-1825; m. Lucretia Phelps: parents of #8557, Electa, b. c 1815, m. Abner Sackett.

NOTE: Weygant had #2890. Angeline Sackett, m. Justin Miller, placed in this family. However, on p. 492 is is stated Angeline is placed here by mistake and she is shown there as: "1168. Angeline Sackett, daughter of (514) Noble and Olive Watkins Sackett, was married to Justin Miller. (Incorrectly placed on page 222 as (2890) daughter of (1162) Abner.)"
