"He was brought up by Perez Smith of Hadley, Mass., who was married to Lovisa Noble, a cousin of his father [Luther Noble]. He removed soon after marriage, from Westfield, Mass. to Cape Vincent, NY., and d. perhaps in Detroit, Mich, while on his way alone, to visit his son in Eagle River, Mich. He was by trade a shoemaker.

Sisters Marietta and Ellen M. Gibbs married brothers Orlando and Chalres Gibbs, sons of Lyman Gibbs who was a second cousin of the sisters.

Marietta married Orlando Fish Gibbs on 14 May 1850 in North Blandford, MA. Orlando was born on 19 Sep 1826 in North Blandford, MA. He died on 19 Mar 1907 in Evanston, IL.

Orlando was a book agent and was asked to open a branch agency in Chicago in the mid-1860's. He later bought 17 1/2 acres in what is now the heart of Evanston. As the town boomed, he sub-divided the land and acquired a substantial fortune. Marietta graduated from Williston Seminary in Easthampton, MA, and taught school in Russell before marrying Orlando.

1106. Joseph Addison Gibbs (Polly Anna Sackett , David Sackett , Isaac Sacket , John Sacket , John , Simon , Thomas , Thomas ) was born on 5 Feb 1831 in Blandford, MA. He died on 23 Feb 1873 in Blandford, MA.

Joseph A. Gibbs owned the farm on North Rd. (aka Chester Rd.) which in later years was known as the Loring farm. A big fire destroyed the house and barn. Rather than rebuilding, Joseph abandoned the farm and in -October 1863 he purchased the farm across the road from Henry S. Burdick. It had 140 acres and a large house built ca 1792. They had three children when they moved: Mari, 4; Hattie, 2; and Frank, 8 mos. William was born in 1864 & Ella in 1866. Hannah was expecting Joseph Jr. when Joseph Sr. caught pneumonia and died in Feb. 1873. Fortunately, he had built the barn before this time.

The widow, Hannah A. (Fish) was a strong and very capable woman. She had taught school in Westhampton before her marriage and was known for her strict discipline and thoroughness in her work. It was said that she kept a whip behind George Washington's picture in her classroom. She kept the farm up with the help of her son Frank, paid off the mortgage, and even bought more acreage. Her widowed mother, Mercy (Lyman) Fish came to live with them. To supplement her income, Hannah became a practical nurse and took care of others when they were ill or had babies.

About 1875/1876 Dexter H. Loring purchased the old farm which Joseph had left; it was said that he bought it for the price of the back taxes. While the Lorings' house was being built, they stayed with Hannah Gibbs. They had two children, George, 3 and a baby, May, who remained a friend of the Gibbs' thru the generations until her death in 1962. Dexter Loring & his wife Ellen (Watson) were not only 3rd cousins of each other but also 3rd cousins of the children of Joseph A. Gibbs.

Joseph married Hanna Algytha Fish on 24 Nov 1857 in Westhampton, MA. Hanna was born on 5 Feb 1831 in Blandford, MA. She died on 9 Jan 1912 in Blandford, MA. Hanna was born on 27 Nov 1831 in Blandford, MA.

In 1864 Jael remarried to Robert Edwin Soules. Apparently she had received notification of Geo's death or disappearance as a result of the Civil War.

My GGrandparents were
Jedediah Joseph Howard b.19 Aug 1854 in Albany, N.Y.and Sarah Eugenia Seager b.12 Dec 1858 in Grand Marsh, Adams County,WI. They were married in Reedsburg, Sauk County, WI. on 16 Aug 1873.
Sarah's parents were Rev.George W. Seager b.18 Dec 1833 in Phelps, Ontario County, N.Y. and Jael (Martha?) Sacket b.2 Mar 1838. They were married 18 Dec 1853 in Dorset, Ashtabula County, OH.

Jael was one of 6 children: Jael, Miriam, David, Betsy, Mark and Joseph. Jael's parents were Mark Sacket and Sarah (Sally) Heald - no info available on them,
but Mark is the son of Ensign David Sacket and Lucretia Shepard - thanks to someone answering my queries. The rest of the line is listed on your web site. The only information I have as of yet is from Rev. George W. Seager and Jael (Martha?) Sacket going forward.Geo.was born in Phelps, N.Y.
Rev. Geo and Jael had 3 children, all born in the Grand Marsh area: Sarah Eugenia, Frank and Lydia (Parker). Rev Geo died 12 Apr 1865 in Jeffersonville, IN. in a military hospital and is buried in a neighboring military cemetery. In 1864 Jael remarried to Robert Edwin Soules. His family moved to the PA/OH border shortly after his birth. He met and married Jael in Dorset, Oh. From there they moved on to Grand Marsh, Adams County, WI. Jael was one of 6 children: Jael, Miriam, David, Betsy, Mark and Joseph.

I appreciate any information and corrections that you're willing to pass on to me. The information that I have, going back to Jael, is from the Howard family Bible and assumed to be fairly accurate. The Bible is dated 1885 but at that time all of these people were alive and well.

Jael was always known to us as Martha. Through her 2nd marriage (1864) the family lost track of her information. It wasn't until we found her death certificate that we even realized what her real name was. Her 1st husband Rev.George W.Seager died in April 1865 in a Civil War Hospital in Jeffersonville, IN. Upon receipt of notice of his impending death she remarried to a Robert Soules. The bottom line is that Jael and Martha are one and the same, unless of course there is another Martha.Lanny

1127. Hon. Leverett Sackett-1271 (David Sackett , David Sackett , Isaac Sacket , John Sacket , John , Simon , Thomas , Thomas ) was born on 21 Apr 1805 in MA.. He died in 1887.

He resided at different periods in the towns of Blandford, Chester and Suffield, in Mass. While a resident of Blandford, he represented that town in the Massachusetts Legislature. In 1887 he removed with his family to California, but died before the end of the year.
