James H. Sackett was born sometime before 1842, probably in Putnam Co., OH, to William and Rachel (Lisle) Sackett.

He married Catharine Geisinger in 1860 in Putnam Co., OH. He married second Caroline Leffler. He had five children. It is uncertain who was the mother of each of these children.

He was born in July 1837 per the 1900 Census
(Ohio/Putnam/Liberty/E.D.63/Pg.20).
He married his first wife, Catherine Guisinger, 28 November 1860. Had a
son William S. on 16 September 1865. His wife died 16 November 1865 or
18 January 1866. He married Caroline Leffler on 28 June 1866. They had
the following children: Lewis A. born 14 June 1870; Lillian May born 4
May 1872; Emma F. born 2 February 1875; and Eva T. born 16 August 1882.
James died 4 August 1906. (All of the above from his pension file).
Caroline was born 29 August 1845 and died 8 May 1920. (Per her death
certificate).
The 1870 census (Ohio/Putnam/Liberty/Leipsic/Pg.25) also shows a boy
James S. aged 3, i.e., born 1867, but he does not appear thereafter. I
did not find any mention of a daughter named Elizabeth ...

I have about 20 pages of legal size copies of the National Archives
pension file. Most of it has to do with James H. Sackett's service
related disability. (He enrolled 28 Aug. 1862 at Tiffin, OH and was
discharged with 1/2 disability on 26 June 1865 at Camp Dennison, after
being wounded at Chickamauga, Mission Ridge, and Nashville.) Included is
a questionnaire he filled out 4 June 1898 detailing his family
information; a copy of his marriage record to Caroline Leffler; details
of his military service; etc.

served under William T. Sherman and named his eldest son William
Sherman Sackett (my husband's great-grandfather). William S. in turn
named his eldest son William Tecumseh Sackett (my husband's
grandfather). William T. then in turn named his eldest son William
Tecumseh as well (my husband's uncle).

Socrates Sackett settled with his family in town of Fremont, in Dec., 1849, but a
month later his house and all it contained was burned. In 1852, he removed to Cochecton Centre, where he has since resided and reared his family. He was, early in life, a carpenter and builder, but for many years has been a farmer. He is greatly respected by his townsmen and for many years has been a Justice of the Peace and a Notary Public.
