Generation No. 2

2.  REV. REV. WILLIAM JOHN2 CRESWICK (WILLIAM1) was born April 04, 1815 in Croydon, Surrey England, and died November 06, 1895 in Pleasant Mound Illinois.  He married POLLY ANNA SLYE November 06, 1845 in West Lavington England, daughter of SLY and ELIZABETH.  She was born 1817 in Warminster, Wiltshire England, and died in Clavering Essex England.

Notes for REV. REV. WILLIAM JOHN CRESWICK:

Polly Anna Sly is said to have died at sea on the way to the USA.

His occupation was that of a traveling preacher.  At one point.  Rev. Creswick left his children at the Perkins house hold.  That of John Henry Perkins and Edna Durham.  This is most likely how Anna and Ephriam got together.

 Notes for POLLY ANNA SLYE:

Family lore states that Polly died at sea and was buried there.  I am checking into this.  If she died at sea then there would be a ships notice and a register in England of this death.

Another source "Bond Co. Gen. Soc."  States that she died in Kentucky prior to coming to Illinois.

Another source states that she died at sea and William re-married a woman in New York city.  It also states that it was this woman that died in Ky.  UMPH...The mystery of family.

 Notes for ANNA MATILDA CRESWICK:

Anna came to Pleasant Mound about 1852.  She first was located in Kentucky and then on to Bond County Illinois.  She is listed in the 1860 census as living in the home of John Henry Perkins and Edna Durham Perkins.  John was known to take in anyone who needed a place to live. This may have been how she came to know Ephriam and married him.

Annie as she was known was musically inclined.  In the position of Robin Perkins Briggs is an organ still in beautiful condition that was owned by Annie.  Janice Kay Perkins of Smithboro is in position of Annie's cook book.  In this cook book there is a recipe for a salve for a horses eye!  It's in her own hand and badly worn.  Aren't most cookbooks that are good in that condition.
Annie and Ephriam were married by John Crouch MG.
 Greenville Advocate 1919 Obit.

Mrs. Annie Creswick Perkins
born 7 June 1847 in Clavering Essex Co. England died 15 November 1919 at Pleasant Mound in Bond County Married 28 Feb. 1861 in Bond County to Ephriam Perkins who died 23 October 1887.

She had two sons and two daughters proceed her in death.  She is survived by 4 sons. John W. Perkins of Terre Hute Indiana, George E. Oscar E. and Bertrand all of Pleasant Mound and one daughter Rosa Belle Edwards of North Dakota.

Annie is listed as the Head of household in the Bond County 1900 Census as the Following:

Anna   Perkins              Head          1-1847

Oscar                            Son             6-1876

 Notes for EPHRAIM PERKINS:

He is buried in the Maxey cemetery, Bond County Illinois.  He was listed as a Merchant in the 1880 census for Bond County and was at one time a co-owner of a Store in Pleasant Mound with Elisha Matthews.

Ephriam Perkins is listed in the 1860 Bond County Census as living in the home of C.P. Mathews. His age is 28 and a Merchant.

Ephriam is listed in the Bond County 1870 Census as the following:
Ephriam Perkins        38    M.  Ill     Farmer
Annie                          23     F   England      keeping house
Sarah A.                       8      F    Illinois
William                        6       M   Illinois
George                         5       M    Illinois

If Annie has a daughter listed as age 8 in the 1870 census and she is 23 she was

about 15 years old at the time of the Childs Birth! ( I know you all know how to do the math but...) Annie and Ephriam were married in 1861. There was a respectable time frame between marriage and the birth of the child that wasn't my point.  It's that she was 14 at the time of marriage and that is young by any standards.

 Notes for OSCAR ELMER PERKINS:

A fond memory of Harold Perkins ( a son of Oscar).

There was a Barn just north of the old home place built by John Henry Perkins and his son Ephriam.  Near this barn was a well that was a 100 ft. deep.

He was farming with two sons and a storm (small one came up)

walked under a tree and lighting bolt struck him and blew his shoes and straw hat into small pieces.

 Notes for BERTRAND DICK PERKINS:

His head stone reads:  Aged 76 years 4 months and 15 days.

Dick and Ollie lived on the old homestead in Pleasant Mound.  The house was built by John Henry Perkins and Ephraim.   It seems that the home place always went to the baby of the family upon the death of the father.

Dick and Ollies son Darel was born there.

He did a lot of work with fruit orchard and the grafting of different types of apple trees in order to create the perfect apple tree.

There was a story that my Uncle Roger L. Perkins told me about how "Dick" always warned them (Dad and Uncle) about putting the old gas cans on the handle bars of Their bikes.  He (Dick) always said that they could fall and get really hurt and if that happened they shouldn't expect him to help.   Any way one day my uncle and my Dad saw Dick riding the bike and wouldn't you know it , he had the gas can on the handle bars, he hit a bump and fell. I was told that neither boy ever said a word to him about it, they just went to him somber faced and helped him up!   I'll bet they wanted to say something don't you?

There is a wonderful story told to me about Old Dick as I have heard many call him by a nice of his Myrtle Mae Dothager and her brother.  It goes like this...Old Dick used to like to go fishing ...Not just any fishing, he liked to do what he called Hogin.  This is fishing in the weeds of the bank of Hurricane creek with his bare hands.   There were different types of fish available at different times of the year.

Now when Old Dick would find a fish he would get the most stern look on his face and up would come his hands with a fish in them.

 Another story goes like this..

Old Dick weighed about 120 pounds soaking wet.  (I don't know if it's true or not but, I was told once that it's the fat in a person that made them float) I was told by Myrtle Mae Perkins Dothager who used to fishing with Old Dick and her father Cleo Perkins who was Dick's Nephew by his brother Oscar,  that Old Dick could float.  Myrtle Mae's brother Lloyd that he had actually seen Old Dick smoke a cigarette while floating and not even get it wet!  That must have really been something to see!

No matter what, when they would go fishing or swimming, Old Dick would stick his big toe in the water and exclaim   "Suffern Tom Cats, That water is Wet!"

To me that says it all!  He must have been quite the fellow to know!

 Notes for MYRTLE MAE PERKINS:

This is a transcript of a letter from Myrtle Mae written March 18, 1999

 Dear Sonya-

Yes, I could read your letter-  I enjoyed it.  Big print is much easier.

My name is Myrtle Mae, accent more on Mae.  A few people call me Myrtle, but, most by both names.  Even though we are new friends, I too feel a close and comfortable and concerned with you & your family.  There's no explaining it but it might be God's blessing to us both.

I hate to tell you that I was wrong about something----I would like to be perfect but---I talked this week to my brother in Virginia.  He went fishing with your dad & Darel & Dick (the older) (Bertrand Perkins) He says that old Uncle Dick always said "Suffering Tom Cats that water is wet" as he stuck his toe in the water.  I expect he's right because he went more and later than I did.  He's four years younger than me.  I'm sorry to have told you anything wrong.  The rest of the story was the same.  He said for you to call him--he might know other incidents.  He hopes to come to the reunion too>  I hope you & he can be here. I look forward to seeing and talking with you.

I am sending some of the papers I have.  The charts were sent to me by your father when he was young and still a mormon. I thin you may already have them.  The others are not well organized but the best I can do now.

Take care and tell you family hello from me.

Your Friend,

Myrtle Mae Dothager.

A wonderful lady!!!  Her brother she is referring to is Lloyd Perkins of Fredericksburg Virginia.

 Notes for ROBERT DOTHAGER:

Some information gathered about this family came from the Caylor Family Reunion that I attended on July 25 1999.  This was at the Mulberry Grove Fire Station.  The info was added to a form that I had there from actual family members!  Thank you so much for helping us to get this information accurate!

CARLOS CARSON CAYLOR

Another very well-known native of Bond County was Carlos Carson Caylor.  He was born in a very small settlement known as Hamburg about five miles south of Mulberry Grove on Nov. 3, 1902.  His father was Charles Caylor who was born in a log cabin during the Civil War.  His father, Allen, served in the Union army.  Charles was born September 1 1864. As a boy he grew up in a wooded area with a small clearing and attended old Hamburg school.  As a young man he attended Teacher's training school and later taught for 15 years.  some schools he taught were Woodland, Willow Branch, Concord and others.  Later he gave up teaching and turned to farming.  Steam threshing, saw-milling, grinding grain, and sorghum making.  He died on October 5 1946 in the same house that he and his wife started housekeeping in, having lived there for more than fifty years.

Caylor roots in America from Hesse-Cassel Germany at the age of 18.  He married, settled in Virginia and had 18 children.  During the Westward movement of the 1800's a member of the 4th generation, Allen settled in Bond County Ill. having migrated from Montgomery County Ohio.

Carlos' mother was Ida May Rench Caylor, born on a farm about seven miles south of Mulberry Grove, April 28, 1869.  She grew up on the farm and attended Willow Branch School.  At one time she was a pupil of Charles Caylor who later became her husband.  She died August 26, 1850.

It was in her father's barn that the old Dunkard Church (later Church of the brethren) was organized in 1843.  a member of the church donated a part of his land for a church cemetery known as Noffsinger Cemetery under the control of the church.  Even though a church cemetery, anyone in the community was allowed to use it even to this day(1978)

The above mentioned Carlos, grew up on the farm helping his father with all of his pursuits and attended Hamburg's one room school.  He graduated from Greenville High School in 1923.  he obtained a teachers certificate in the same year and started teaching in the country.  One room Hunter School at a salary of $77.50 per month.  He attended Greenville College on Saturdays, summers, and nights to earn a B.S. degree in Education.  After teaching for 40 years he retired in 1963.

Carlos was 5th of eight children, namely, Bertha May who married Carlos Morris, Cecil who died in 1889, Flora Theresa married Robert Dickson, Roxie Edith never married, Mary Lorena Married Cleo Perkins, Ralph Allen married Lucile Rench and Ida Angeline Married Arthur Dooley.

Carlos married Esther Anna Perkins on May 5 1828.  two children were born to them(1) Norma Jean, who married Lynn STECKMAN, and had three children, Barbara Jean, Gary Lynn, and Patricia Ann.(2) Carlos Donald who married Lavada Walker and had four children.  Shelly Lynn, Sheryl Jean, Sherry Joan and Jason Donald.

Esther's roots are grounded in Old England.  Her parents were Oscar E. Perkins, and Myrta Hunter Perkins. Her Great Grandmother Creswick died on shipboard while coming to America from England and was buried at sea.

Her grandmother Perkins known by all in the community as Aunt Anna Perkins was born in Clavering, Essex Co. England Jan 7 1847 and came to this country at about the age of seven.  Esther attended Concord grade school and graduated from Mulberry Grove High School in 1927.

I only remember meeting Grandma once as a small child. Although I did meet her more than that.  I remember a jolly lady with no teeth.  She always had candy in her pocket and loved children.    She, being a ministers wife was always a giver.  She believed that when you helped someone in need that the good fortune would come back to 1000 fold.  She was Always there with a cake or canned goods. She wrote children's poems, could crochet wonderfully and always wanted to start a home for wayward boys.

I believe you are the daughter of who I knew as Dickie Perkins.  I attended grade school at Pleasant Mound.  My mother, Edna Dey, was his teacher and I was in the 8th grade the same year that he was in the first grade. I felt so much older thank him that I served as his protector.  I remember one day when he fell off of the merry-go-round and got up before we could get it stopped and got a cut on his head.  I tried to console him until we could get him home.  I think he had to get a couple of stitches to close the cut.

It was nice to know someone was looking out for ya Daddy!
Thank you so much for the view into a moment of my fathers life.

Darrell served in the United States Air force from about 1957-1970 time frame and went to rank of Sergeant.   He was very interested in UFO'S and Gold mines left by American Indians.  He had very unusual ideas about time and space travel.  he was a very intelligent man but, seemed to have gone over the edge sometime after he got out of the military.  The Source for the marriage to Mary Ann Sorensen is a photo copy of the marriage license of said marriage in the possession of Sonya L.  Notes for ROGER LEROY PERKINS:

Uncle Roger was a very jolly man who loved to laugh and he had a very infectious laugh at that.  He enjoyed hunting and fishing very much.  He provided very well for his family with this and working.  He died in what he would have said was Gods Church.  Out in the middle of a field hunting deer.  His passion.

I haven't been to very many funerals but, his was one to be remembered. There were at least 300 people that came to the viewing!  There were so many flowers that it was hard to get them into Aunt Jan's house after. Uncle Roger was  buried in the Maxey Cemetery out side of Smithboro where his father, Mother and Brother were buried.  I have very many fond memories of this man.  He was respected and admired by many!
