1850 Mississippi Census

These folks were in the following counties in Mississippi in 1850 and one way or another a climb through the branches will lead all the way down to me and mine.

William B. EAVES (b. abt 1822 - grandson of Sterling PRICE ) and his young family were living in Amite County. This is the only census that I have found this family.

Russell Lowery (b. 1812) with his wife and children. His youngest child at this time, 2 month old Mary F., will later marry Marques De Lafayette Price, son of Sterling Russell Price (b. 1804). By 1860 Russell and Elizabeth moved to Van Zandt County, Texas.

d 1850 Census - MS, Attala County, Twp 10 R 8 E, Oct 23, line 3:

Major Brown (b. abt 1800) and his mother, Lucinda Brown nee Towles are listed together next to his widowed sister, Elizabeth Brown Friday who had married Thomas Friday in 1827 and his sister Mary Brown Lindsey, and her husband, Archibald Lindsey. This is the only census I have found Major and his mother.

1850 - MS, Attala Co, Twp 14 R8E, sht 163, Oct 24, line 12, 1076/1078:

Elizabeth Brown Friday, (b. 1814) the widow of Thomas Friday is listed with her children between her older brother with their mother and her sister, Mary, and brother-in-law, Archibald Lindsey. This is the only census that I have Elizabeth Brown Friday. In 1860 some of her children can be found in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana, and also Henderson County, Texas.

1850 - MS, Attala Co, Twp 14 R8E, sht 163, Oct 24, line 14, 1077/1079 :

Archibald Lindsey, (b. 1805) married to Mary Brown (daugther of Lucinda (Towles) Brown is listed next. Their son, Elija, later married Zilpah M. Pugh who was the daughter of Tignal Pugh. Archibald and Mary moved to Texas before 1858 when he dies and is buried in Asbury Cemetery, Van Zandt County, Texas. Mary is buried there the next year, 1859. Most of their children can be found in the Henderson County, Texas, 1860 census, while their daughter, Rachel Lucinda (Lindsey) Friday, is found in Natachitoches Parish, Louisiana, with her husband, William Major Friday.

1850 - MS, Attala Co, Twp 14 R8E, sht 163, Oct 24, line 23, 1078/1080:

P. M. Ray (b. abt 1800) with wife, Rachael, and their children. The next year their daughter, Clarissa, will marry James Russell Lowery, son of James Frank Lowery. I found this same family listed about 3 weeks earlier in Winston County MS.

1850 Census - MS, Attala County, Oct 24, (written 134) (stamped 324), line 5, 1082/1084:

James Frank Lowery (b. abt 1809) with wife, Dorcus Dorean Lucus, and their children. The next year their son, James Russell Lowery, will marry Clarissa Ray , daughter of P. M. Ray . James Frank dies sometime between 1852 and 1860 as we find a widowed Dorcus in Natachitoches Parish, Louisiana, in 1860 along with some of her children.

Dempsey Sullivant (b. 1822) with his wife, Martha Jane Park, and their first child are listed by Dempsey's uncle, Laban Pugh. Dempsey's mother, Isabell Pugh was a sister of Laban and Langford Pugh. 1860 finds Dempsey in Tuscaloosa County, Mississippi .

1850 Census - MS, Chickasaw County, Western Division, page 724, Sep 16, line 29, 168/168:

Laban Pugh, (b. 1800) son of Simeon and grandson of William W. Pugh, and brother of Langford (b. 1814), with his wife, Patience Parker, and their children. Laban and family move to Tyler County, Texas, by 1860 and he dies there in 1864.

1850 Census - MS, Chickasaw County, Western Division, page 724, Sep 16, line 32, 169/169:

Langford Pugh, (b. 1814) grandson of William W. Pugh and brother of Laban (b. 1800), with his wife, Lydia McCool, and their children. Late in 1857 Lydia dies and in the 1860 Calhoun County MS census we find Langford listed in the home of Meedy White.

John A. Mullen (b. abt. 1821) and his with Lavina Farmer and their first three children. Lavina was the daughter of William Farmer who is listed on the next page of this census. John and Lavina's young son, James M(onroe) will later marry Sarah Elizabeth Pugh, daughter of Tignal Pugh. They move to Van Zandt County TX by 1860.

William Farmer (b. abt 1804) with his second wife, Elizabeth, and their children and some of the children from his first marriage to Malinda Walker (b. abt 1805 - d. 1842).

1850 Census - MS, Copiah Co, Aug 6, line 5, 14/14:

Robert Currie (b. 1795), wife Mary Ann Gillas and their children. Robert was the son of Angus Currie.

Calvin Blue with is wife Maria McLaurin, their 2 children and Maria's mother, Mary McLaurin.

Newell William Pate (b: 1811) wife Harriett Brown. She was a daughter of Lucinda (Towles) and Thomas Brown. Newell and Harriet move with at least some of their children to Henderson County TX where Newell dies before the 1860 census is taken.

A. H. Buckles's (b: 1810) daughter, Mahala Jane, will marry Hugh James Fairly, son of Peter FAIRLY .

1850 Census - MS, Jefferson County, Twp 8 East, Jul 13, line 20, 179/179:

William Shaw (b: 1818) and his wife, Mary Ann McLaurin and their first 2 children. Margaret (McLaurin) McLaurin, Mary Ann's mother, is also living with them. I have not, yet, determined where the 11 year old female, C. Patterson belongs. Mary Ann and Abigail Effie (Fairly)Fairly are 1st cousins living next to each other.

1850 Jefferson County MS Census of Township 10 East, Aug 10, stamp 110: Line 4, 445/445:

James Stuart FAIRLY (b. 1809) with his wife, Abigail Effie FAIRLY and their first 3 children, Virginia, Agustus and Albert (Prince Albert). James and Abigail were 2nd cousins. James's father was Peter (b: abt 1783 who was son of Archibald) and Abigail Effie's father was Peter (b: 1793 who was son of Alexander). I found them next in the 1860 Johnson County TX census.

James L. Grissom (b: 1825) and his young family. Ten years later they have moved to Texas and are listed in the 1860 Henderson County TX census.

Obediah Overton Cotton (b: 1805) (son of Allen COTTON) with his wife, Rebecca Elizabeth Williams and some of their children. They were married here in Oktibbeha County MS in 1828 but moved to Winston County MS before 1840 where they are listed in that census. Obediah will be found here in Oktibbeha County in 1860, 1870 and 1880.

Jesse B. McGee (b: abt 1821) with his first wife, Margaret (MNU) and 2 young children. I do not know how 14 year old Willam Waddle fits in ... possibly a brother of Margaret's? Jesse is found later in 1860 Winston County Census .

Frederick Franklin Mullins (b: abt 1797) with wife, Sarah "Sally" Cotton and children. Sarah was a daughter of Allen Cotton. This family is found 10 years later in the 1860 Choctaw County MS census.

Effington STRICKLAND (b: abt 1812) with his 1st wife, Cecelia. I have, yet, to discover her maiden name. Cecelia died shortly after this census was taken and Effington marries his 2nd wife, Arrena Barrett in May 1852. In 1860, he is still in Pontotoc County MS.

1850 ... MS ... Pontotoc ... stamp 118, Oct 8: Line 1, 850/850:

Jesse Barrett (b: 1795) and some of his children and his son-in-law, Christopher Gentry. Arrena (Orena) will marry Effington STRICKLAND (listed just before) about 1-1/2 years from when this census is taken.

Abel Lewis Eaves (b: abt 1820) was another grandson of Sterling PRICE. We can follow Abel and his family in 1860 where they are listed in Itawamba County MS.

Howard Harvey Eaves (b: abt 1790) with his wife, Faithey Price (daughter of Sterling PRICE) with their 5 youngest of 13 children. They are still in Pontotoc County MS in 1860.

1850 ... MS ... Pontotoc County, Oct 11, line 29, 969/969:

George Henderson Purvis (b: 1815) and his young family. They will be found in Tippah County MS in 1860.

1850 ... MS ... Pontotoc ... Andrew J. Clark, Oct 12, Line 31, 1008/1008:

Richard Walter Pannell (b: abt 1801) listed just before his younger brother, Elias Mitchell "Cap" PANNELL.

1850 - Census MS, Pontotoc Co, REEL #M432-816, PG 150, Oct 22 - hn 1283 / fn 1283:

Elias Mitchell "Cap" PANNELL with wife Nancy HANKS and their first 7 children. They are still in Pontotoc County MS in 1860.

Benjamin Franklin Price (b: 1816) was a son of Sterling PRICE. Benjamin and family are listed just before his older brother "Wash" in this census. I have been unable to find Benjamin in the 1860 census, but he had moved to Lamar County TX by 1863 where he died in Aug 1863 and Mariana died there in 1867.

George Washington "Wash" Price (b: abt 1813) was a son of Sterling PRICE. "Wash" and some of his family moved to Jefferson County AR sometime between 1850 and 1860 and "Wash" dies there before the 1860 census is taken.

Peter Lowery was a brother-in-law of Martha P. (Catledge) Lowery.

1850 ... MS ... Winston ... Aug 30, line 16, 64/67:

James Catledge with wife Martha Ann Cotton. They moved to Arkansas where both James and Martha died in 1858. Their children are back in Mississippi by 1860, some of them listed twice in Octibbeha County and Winston County.

1850 Census, MS, Winston County, Aug 31, line 37, 73/76: Next page, stamp 321, line 1: They are listed next to Elijah and Susannah Catledge. They are listed the household just before Elijah Catledge.

Elijah CATLEDGE with his wife and their youngest child, Serena, still at home. I do not know how (or if) the 6 year old John Wilson relates to them.

Jonathan E. Shumaker (b: abt 1818) with wife Harriet Cotton and children. In 1860 they are in Neshoba County MS.

1850 Census - MS, Winston County, Sep 2, page 645(323), line 24, 108/111:

Stephen Ashcraft (b: 1815) and his young family. His wife, Nancy, is the daughter of Elijah CATLEDGE. The Samuel Green in their household will mary Nancy's sister, Syrenia, in the next year of 1851. In 1860, Stephen and Nancy will be in Leake County MS.

1850 Census, MS, Winston County, Sep 9, line 2, 235/238:

David COTTON (b: abt. 1814) and his wife Hannah ?. Their young daughter, Elizabeth, will later marry Alvin Monroe PUGH who was the son of Mary Polly (CATLEDGE) and Tignal PUGH. I have, yet, to discover Hannah's maiden name. Might she have been a CATLEDGE?

1850 Census, MS, Winston County, Sep 9, line 10, 236/239:

Alson Catledge, (b: 1810) his wife Levina McMillon and their children. Alson will die in 1859 but Levina and many of her children can be found still in Winston County MS in the 1860 census.

1850 Census, MS, Winston County, Sep 9, line 16, 237/240:

John W. Lowery(b: 1822), wife Martha P. Catledge and their young family. They can be found next in the 1860 Leake County MS census.

1850 Census - MS, Winston County, Sep 9, line 25, 238/241:

P. M. Ray (b: abt 1800) and family. They are found again in the 1850 Attala County MS census on October 22. Again, they are close neighbors with the Lowery family.

Jospeh T. Lowery (b: 1820 son of Christopher Lowery), his wife Eveline Livingston and children ages 2 to 10. In 1860 they are listed in Choctaw County MS.
