Letter from Jane Carr and Susannah McIntosh to Benjamin Hawkins, Aug. 19, 1833.

[Senate Doc. 512, vol. 247, page 519]

Fort Mitchell, Aug. 19, 1833

Dear Sir,

I received your favor of the 6th instant a few days since, and I herewith enclose you copies of the powers of attorney given to Benjamin Hawkins, and transferred by him to me.

The claimants living in Arkansas, believing that the money would be sent here, gave to Benjamin Hawkins powers of attorney to collect it for them.  Hawkins, finding the money had not been sent on to pay the claims, proposed to me to purchase them. I refused to do so until we should go before the commissioners, then in session and they would say to me that the claim was a good one, and the transfer would be legal, and that they would in their report request the money to he sent here. All this was done, and General Parsons, you will see, is a witness to the transfer.

If they did not mention this in their report I presume they forgot it. You recollect you saw Hawkins, and he stated to you that I had paid him the money, and that he had settled with the claimants in Arkansas.

If any farther evidence is necessary, they can get it by addressing a letter to the agent in Arkansas, and get him to give them the facts.

I have the original powers in my possession.

Yours respectfully,
Thomas Crowell

Col. J. J. Abert,
