Further examination of the 1880 census and George W Smith indicates that George is not related to Elial as the mother of George is said to have been born in Virginia.
1840 US Federal Census of Marion TWP, Hancock county Ohio has Eliel Smith and Family. Eliel is listed as being from 20-30 yrs. A son is from from 15-20. HIs wife is listed as 40-50 and a daughter as 15-20. Childrens ages are awfully close to his. His wife is much older. Is it possible that children are hers by a previous marriage?]]
It is now assumed that Ira Smith, born 1813 in Ohio and
Elial C Smith born 1814 in Ohio are brothers. Previously Ira
Smith was not linked as a child of Justin. He was confused
with an Ira J Smith who was the son of Elial C Smith.
The 1870 Census of Salem TWP, Allegan County Michigan lists
these familys near to each other. Also Bennet Smith, son of
Ira Smith is living with his sister and her husband, Henry
Johnson right next door to Ira Smith.]]
