Henry Burt
We first hear of Henry Burt at Roxbury, Mass., where his house was burned, for which loss the General Court made a grant to the town 8 pounds in Nov., 1639. He removed to Springfield, Mass., about 1638, and was there clerk of the band and clerk of the writs. He was a lay exhorter at a meetings on the Sabbath, when Springfield was without a minister. Was yearly chosen one of the five men"by ye general vote and consent of ye Plantation for ye ordering ye prudential affairs of ye towne." Was one of the "six men undernamed shall have full power to lay out the lands both of upland and meddowe, etc.,"and his name is constantly appearing, in various positions of trust, on the records. On his death-bed Mr Burt made a verbal will, which certain witnesses took oath to, and which the Court allowed. By the inventory of the estate, his property amounted to 181 pounds,14s., though there were said to be 50 pounds debts. On the record appears "Henry Burt (ye Clarke of ye writts) dyed ye 30" of April 1662 in ye evening and was buryed May 1, (62)." There is a tradition that Ulalia, His wife, was laid out for dead in England, and put in her coffin, but signs of life appearing at her funeral, she recovered, came to New England, and was the mother of nine- teen children. Her death in Springfield is thus recorded, "Widow Vlaliah Burt was sick and died Aug.19, 1690." The sons and all but four daughters were born before coming to Springfield. Of the , Sarah Gregory married, for second husband, Henry Wakley of Hartford, removed to Stratford; his will dated July 11, 1689. Abigail Ball married, for third husband, Lt. Thomas Stebbins of Springfield. Elizabeth Wright married, Sept. 26 1684, her second husband, Nathaniel Dickinson of Hatfield, and died there his second wife; he married a third. Mary Brooks removed with her husband to Deerfield, and died there. Wm. Brooks, born 1610, come from London to Va, 1635; was at Springfield, 1653; of Deerfield, 1686, where he died Dec. 30, 1688.
John Stiles, husband of Dorcas, died Dec. 8, 1683, at Windsor, Conn. Their children: Sarah, b. Sept. 12, 1661m m. May 5, 1681, Ephraim Bancroft, who died 1727; she married, for second husband, Thos. Phillips and died Oct., 1727; Hannah, b. March. 23, 1664-5, m.Jan. 21, 1687, Samuel Bliss, and died Dec. 8, 1704; John, b. Dec. 10, 1665; Ephraim; Thomas m. Bethiah Hanmer.
President Stiles in his MS. Genealogy of the Stiles family, 1764, thus alludes to John Stiles, husband of Dorcas: " The family tradition says, that a woman and her child paid only a single passage, but double if weaned; and though John was old enough to wean when they came from England, 1634, yet his mother suckled him during the voyage, and so gained his passage."
John Bagg, husband of Hannah Burt, died Sept. 5, 1683. Their children were: Hannah, b. July 8, 1658, m. Feb.3, 1681, Nathaniel Sikes, who died Sept. 15, 1687; she married for second husband, April 7, 1706, Samuel Miller, and died May 13, 1740; Mercy, b. Dec. 23, 1660, m. June 26, 1679, Ebenezer Jones, and died April 7, 1738; Daniel, b. Nov. 10, 1663, d. Dec. 7, 1663; John, b. March. 26, 1665, m. March 30, 1689, Mercy Thomas, and died Nov., 1740; Daniel, b. May 12, 1668, m. 1694, Hannah _____, d. Aug. 18, 1738; Jonathan, b. Nov. 2, 1670, m. Jan.7, 1696, Mary Weller, d. Oct. 6, 1746; Abigail, b. April 23, 1673; James, b. Sept., 1675, d.
